Re: trail-bike/4WD tracks around Menai/Heathcote, Sydney - LET'S GO!

Rich, Ange
Is one of the tracks you are talking the track down to the The "Needles" in Woronora. South of Barden Ridge and in parts of Woronara Reserve
The track is easy and gets to a corner, from the intersection you run down about 50metres to the Ford across the Woronora River. You cant get out the other side of the river as it is a locked gate.
If it is the spot the rock steps were not that easy last time I was there. We used to train council workers down there for the advanced course. I think they had Rodeos and we had to road build up and down for it (and they still bashed and crashed emoticon )
Rich can you email me your google earth marker (or attach it in a post in the other forum)

Peter,

Are you talking about the "part 2" section of the first post in this thread?

Also, the co-ordinates I posted are in the middle of page 2 of this thread, and also in the thread on your forums.

Kurnell (was trail-bike/4WD tracks around Menai/Heathcote, Sydney)

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

Due to the fact that if we proceed with this outing in the proposed location, we will be breaking the law, and while the risk of being caught may be negligible, I can't guarantee we wont be caught, and thus have decided against organising this outing at the previously-discussed location(s) through this forum.

If people are still very keen on looking at this location, you will need to contact me privately, either through PM or private email through these forums, or directly on my email address which can be found on my website (For privacy reasons I can't post my email address in a message, but see my signature for the link to my website). Keep in mind that the fines for being caught are high, and the last thing we/I want is for you new members (or anyone for that matter!) to get caught and cop a massive fine!

Alternatively I can recommend Boat Harbour @ Kurnell (as previously mentioned in an earlier post), which there should be no problems continuing discussion in this thread (I'll rename the thread now emoticon ).

Thank you Rich for being a true "X-TRAIL VETRAN" member and acting so responsibly.

Very much appreciated.

Just another reminder to all new members about going off-road for the first time.

Check THIS thread before you venture out and ensure you get that in writing on your insurance policy.

Re: Kurnell (was trail-bike/4WD tracks around Menai/Heathcote, Sydney)

Hi Guys,

Disappointed to hear about the apparent problems with permission for access to the planned areas in Lucas Heights/Menai.

One question: has anyone called the council there to confirm the situation? If not I'm happy to give 'em a bell to see if they can officially advise us on access, or who we could ask if not the council.

I do agree that we need to do the right thing - 1) half a dozen 4WDs are more likely to attract the attention of the authorities/owners, and 2) I'd be the first to be pi**ed off if someone was trespassing on my land without my permission or if someone was ignorantly driving over some land that had some kind of special significance (fauna / aboriginal?).

Boat Harbour's good too - haven't been on the sand with the exy yet.

Ben

Re: Kurnell (was trail-bike/4WD tracks around Menai/Heathcote, Sydney)

I have just emailed Sutherland Council, hopefully I get a response by the end of tomorrow - not that it would be enough time to organise this outing in the Heathcote areas legally, but we'll see how we go...

If they confirm that clean-ups are a required part of the process to access these areas, I'm more than happy to do a clean-up emoticon

I know someone in the Suzuki 4WD Club and he pointed me in this direction: Suzuki 4WD Club Menai Clean-up Day

Any ideas for a meet-up time? Is 10am too early for anyone?

Re: Kurnell (was trail-bike/4WD tracks around Menai/Heathcote, Sydney)

I'd recommend bringing lunch (or at least some nibblies), and especially drinking water, as if it's a warm day, you'll be surprised at how quickly you become dehydrated (from the glare of the sun off the sand, and if it's hot, with the A/C turned on as well).

We're still meeting @ Menai Maccas (so you might want to have a late breakfast there?). There's no particular shedule for the day, and it's also going to be a good opportunity to get to know each other better, hang around and chat, and check out each other's modifications...

In the past when I've been to Kurnell, I've had all my fun and ready to go home after about 2 hours after driving in the gate. I'm not sure if Ange is still coming if we're going to Kurnell (instead of the Menai/Heathcote area) but I'm more than happy to show you around the sand dunes. We might try and suss out some tracks around the nearby area (I don't know if any roads are accessible in the Royal National Park, but I reckon they'd be locked gates (although I think there might be some unlocked ones on the residential outskirt back streets on the eastern side of the Princes Highway near Engadine - at least they're not indicated as being locked in my street directory!)

Other things to bring - any recovery gear (fit your tow-ball if you have one and you normally drive around with it removed), and CB radio if you have one (I have a spare hand-held I can lend someone). And sunscreen!

I'll PM those that have responded as coming with my mobile phone number in case you need to contact me for any reason.

Re: Kurnell (was trail-bike/4WD tracks around Menai/Heathcote, Sydney)

Hi All,

I just rang Sutherland Council, spoke with a friendly woman there who advised that there was no official, legal, council owned "4WD park" in the shire; she suggested the only similar thing was at Wanda, which I've found to be the Kurnell park we've already been talking about.

So, if anyone goes wandering off the road around Menai, it's very likely not legit. I guess our only option there might be to approach local landowners (e.g. the owner's of the previously mentioned Aboriginal reserve) - seems like some 4WD clubs have done this and gained access in return for cleaning up. This sounds ok to me - I'd be happy to go in with a trailer or two and haul out some rubbish in return for a couple hour's play :-) But not this weekend...

See you all on Sunday, at Menai Maccas - then off to the beach!

Ben
