Kurnell (was trail-bike/4WD tracks around Menai/Heathcote, Sydney)
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!
SEE TOP OF PAGE 4 OF THIS THREAD BEFORE YOU CONTINUE READING!
I thought there was already mention of this on these forums, but a search came up with nothing...
On the way back from driving the new Coalcliff sea-side road/bridge, Clare and I went for a little venture...
(PART 1)
I don't think it's called Heathcote Rd, but it runs off it - we drove over a mound on the left, just past the last set of traffic lights near the Menai side of the reactor. I've seen it several times before, and today there were no cars parked on the side of the road next to it (indicating there were none or few trail bike riders present). We didn't get out and check, but I reckon we would've been very close to bottoming-out on this mound.
We only stayed for a few minutes (there were a couple of very young kids on small trail bikes with their parents) and drove around a few of the tracks there. It looks like it would definitely be alot of fun in the wet.
I know some people (from other forums) say this area(s) are out-of-bounds/private land/aboriginal land/national park, but there was no signage visible anywhere. There was a couple of vehicles in there which had obviously entered via a more accessible route, as there was no chance they would've made it over the mound we entered through. I should've stopped and asked them where they entered to check for signage there.
I wondered if anyone on these forums knows anything definite about this area and other nearby "trail bike parks" - I know there are more along Heathcote Rd, heading towards Sandy Point, for example), or can recommend others in the area.
(PART 2)
Another place I have wanted to try to access is under the bridge between Alfords Point and Padstow Heights - heading towards Menai on the left hand side, there seems to be some sort of "access road" (which now seems rather overgrown). It is visible as you're comoing across the bridge, but you'd need to go past the barrier on the left hand side, and turn back 180 degrees on the other side of the barrier to get to the spot. When I first saw this access road about a year (or more) ago, it seemed fairly easy/accessible, but now it looks like it would be rather difficult to travel on, overgrown with tall grass and erosion has made the ruts deeper, too.
I highly doubt it, but has anyone been down there before?

Re: trail-bike/4WD tracks around Menai/Heathcote, Sydney
Hi Basshead,
This is my first post in here ok so go easy on me. In reply to ur questions about Menai.
PART 2 first...
That spot ur talking about is a bit steep and rough,Ive been down it a couple of times just for fun, it is not a track that leads anywhere. Basically it takes u down the hill right next to the bridge, looks kinda like a swamp. Not much to see, also be careful if u go downthere, sometimes the mozzies will eat u alive. Its swamp land really. But worth a drive down for sure.
PART 1 reply....
If ur talking about Lucas Heights side (think its called Illawarra road) then u cant ride OR drive in there at all. Security reasons due to terrorists, so dont try it they will come down hard on u.
Heathcoat road has many entry points, most have the "hump" entry point which most are fine in ur 4b getting in. There are some fantastic tracks in Menai, endless things to do. If u know how, u can head towards the river behind the old mini bike club ground.
Once u get to the river, its great for a swim or some sand driving (soft sand) and if u r a thrill seeker, u cna try ur luck in the swamp...yes swamp, after rain, this swamp has left many well setup 4b's stuck for hours. But again i warn u mate... if u have to get out and dig, I hope u have alot of blood to share with the endless supply of mozzies in there...its abreeding ground for them. I have played chicken in that swamp many times, its fantasic when the conditions r right. Also if u head towards the south side away from the river, there is a very good track that goes for a few kms, but again after rain, its a challenge for even my GQ and i have diff locks. I have been going to menai since i was 8 on my yamaha mini enduro 60 cc beast. Know it well. Im now 48 years old so go figure. In those days u could ride around the lucas heights side and it too had soem awsome tracks for bikes. I was there last weekend just to shake the stuffings out of my water tank to clean out the water using bi carb soda....while i was heading home near the nuclear joint..i saw 2 landcruisers being questioned by federal cops..prob wanting to know what they were doing in there. I didnt hang around to find out what happened.
ALso In Menai itself (heathcoat rd side) they have police that patrol it almost 24/7 now on 4 stroke bikes. They r hard to see until its too late, they r fantastic riders too, ive seen them chase a few riders trying to escape...with no luck. Most times..if ur polite and look like ur ok..they will give u a warning and take ur engine and frame numbers down to log for future reference (refering to unregistered bikes here). If they do this, and tell u not to come back...and u do go back....they will confescate ur bike and u have to appera in court. Its serious stuff but mainly they r there to catch stupid idiots who ride like they wone the palce and also to catch rubbish dumpers which frequent in there to dump their rubbish.
Hope this helps
Ange

Re: trail-bike/4WD tracks around Menai/Heathcote, Sydney
Your welcome,
If your that keen to go into Menai, but would feel safer heading in there with big daddy...(a...GQ) let me know. I dont mind taking you around the big track,It will take us most of the day to do a return trip if things get hard that is and once we reach the centre bit, there is some great mud stuff in there if thats what u like. Maybe if you guys know eachother you may want to try it in comfort knowing if ya get stuck, there is someone to get u out....let me know...I love it in there.
Hope i didnt over step the mark by offering a gathering, but the offer is there if u want to explore it.
Ange.
P.S....after the heavy rain..id wait a bit till it dries out, believe me, Menai can get as challenging as most places after rain.
