Re: Upcoming Sydney Shows

I think there's a camping/outdoor show on at darling harbour this weekend...

And it was about this time last year (I think?!) that the 4WD show was on (where I bought my Lightforce driving lights on special)...

Can anyone confirm either of these?

Re: Upcoming Sydney Shows

Clare & I went last weekend - it was packed!!!

The "fishing tank" semi trailer is worth a look at emoticon

Didn't buy any goodies for the X-Trail as money is abit tight with our unit on the market and looking at buying a new place... Wwould've liked to have bought a handheld GPS as I think I've worked out which one I'm after, now (Magellan Explorist 500 or the "Gold" edition - show special of $895 from GPSOZ, or $50 more for the "Gold", but I haven't compared the prices with online retailers yet).

Hi Geoff, nice seeing you at the show on Saturday even though I wasn't supposed to be there (still getting over chicken pox).
Suprisingly after much wheeling and dealing (Michelle is much better than me)we ended up buying a camper trailer. It's a full off road version from Billabong campers from Kyogle NSW. It is yet to be built and we won't pick it up until Aug/Sep.Anyway hope to talk to you about trailer trash soon.

Excellent stuff JD! Tell us more about the trailer, please emoticon

The reason I ask, is that driving back on the way home on Tuesday, I passed a Jayco caravan that had a "For Sale" sign on it and I thought I'd check it out. The owner came-out and opened the caravan for me to have a look at and I said "WOW!!!" it's like a full house on wheels, Air-con, bathroom and toilet, kitchen, lounge, 2 double beds, cupboards everywhere, TV and the rest of it. It looked brand new and the guy only had it for 6 months or so and was going to tour Australia with it, but he had a family emergency and all his plans where cancelled.

Anyway, I asked how much and he said $27,000 negotiable emoticon

The load is 1,607Kg (not loaded), so I wasn't sure if our Exy can handle this, but he said he towed it in his Falcon.

I don't want to spend that much of course and I think this one was too big anyway, but would look for something smaller and cheaper of course.

Maybe we need to start a thread on Caravans and Camper Trailers if there isn't one already. (Can’t remember)

Any info. you can provide would be great and I hope you get better soon, as I know that getting Chicken Pox at our age is not fun emoticon

Just found these 2 thread on Towing and Campers people scored and good info. on towing in general

Re: Upcoming Sydney Shows

We were looking at camper trailers, too...

They ranged in price from around $4000 all the way to over $40,000 - one was even a "base model" - for $43,000! - and it wasn't a Kimberly Kamper, either!

Good work JD.

There were more camper trailers / caravans and everything in between at this show than you could poke a stick (or tow bar) at.
We got there at 10:30am, and ran into JD on the way out at about 1:30pm, having covered the lot except the car section which the Mrs wasnt having a bar of. (I did manage to convince her to sneak into the nissan site, since I have a slight interest emoticon )

The impression I came away with is that nothing much has changed in the caravan world since our 1978 model, except for the explosing in soft-top camper trailer brands. They still have a fridge, gas stove, etc. and the same sort of layout. Fabric might be nicer, but thats about it.

I'm not sure how those canvas roofed and floored camper trailers will hold up in the 2nd hand market. See a few on ebay that dont sell, but they are cheap enough to start with so if you get a good 10 years out of it, you'll be well ahead.

Jalal, I would be hesitant on towing 1600kg caravan with an xtrail. By the time you add your gear and water, gas, etc you'll be pushing 2000kg which is a lot for a 4 cyclinder 'trail.

My camper trailer is around 1200-1300kg laden. I've seen reports of towing 1500kg laden ok. Anything more could be asking for trouble, or a slow trip. The sort of places you take camper trailers/caravans can sometimes lead you down steep back roads.
