Re: Boat Harbour 4WD Track @ Kurnell, Sydney
Rich
cant say exactly they are unmarked, but it is between the beach and the big flat open area and when you go up it the bushes are either side scratching you. When you get to top it veers Left and goes down. About half way there is a track to the right (if you are at this point take it)
If you decide to go another 5 yards on, the track has big deep ruts (you can stand in them and look under your car)
If you have stupidly decided to not take the turn off and find yourself at this point - and you cant reverse back up the hill, and you are the only person in the park. You could stop and wait or you could just put it in gear, close eyes and go for the ride.
If you do take this stupid option, you will say quote: gee that was fun, wish someone took my photo but I aint doing it again
Can you pick the idiot who did this.
BTW who did you take for training
cheers
Peter

Re: Boat Harbour 4WD @ Kurnell
Sorry for the very short notice...
Clare and I went to Boat Harbour this afternoon because it was such a beautiful day and we had the afternoon free...
REPORT:
Excellent couple of hours!!!
Beach driving isn't so difficult after-all...
Drove past all the dunes as I hadn't driven on sand before, and didn't want to get stuck straight away!
After going down the steep hill onto the beach, saw two other (empty) X-Trails parked - probably owned by some of the many parachute-surfboarding people there, so didn't get to speak to either of them...
Drove quite a long way along the beach and turned around when it looked (and felt) like it was getting abit too soft, and had already been churned up by previous 4WD's...
Headed back to the dune pit in the centre of the park and watched some other 4WD's drive around for a bit, and there was also this massive Chev or something (I didn't know it was 2WD until I saw it bogged just before we left - I got photos too!).
There was also a wide shallow muddy puddle which I saw one 4WD go through at speed, which totally covered it in mud... Looked like fun, so of course I had to go through it too... Our X-Trail has never been so dirty - all over the roof as well! Got video footage from inside & outside the car (yes, two goes!), and photos of it afterwards, too.
Got some good footage going down the biggest dune there, and then I attempted going up it as well - and it made it first go! Piece of cake! Going down - the brakes were stopping the wheels, but the car would still slide a little. I could stop mid-way down more than once without it sliding. ABS didn't kick in, but gravity still pulls you down a bit. It was so steep that the digital camera slid off the front seat (without me braking at the same time).
Also attempted some of the bush tracks in there, and they didn't go very far and they all came back out into the dune pit anyway... One of the ones I tried was very narrow and too-soft sand for me to even think about continuing, so I just reversed out.
Also saw one 4WD come over a dune beside me (I was on the other side of the dune) and then they slammed on their brackes as there was a bit of rock there (I'd already seen it and driven around it), so there are some hazards associated with dune driving that isn't mentioned in any of the articles I've read about it (ie: head-on with another car coming up the other side ). I did notice there were patches of broken glass around the place...
Best $15 I have ever spent I reckon - only problem is that it'll probably cost me just as much again to wash it @ CarLovers tomorrow
Photos & footage to be uploaded hopefully later this weekend or early next week.
Asked about the season pass, and it ends @ end of this year, then the next season pass starts Jan 1st. Pass is $75, so unless we go about 5 times before Christmas, it wouldn't be worthwhile getting the pass...
