Fraser Island, Qld

David, as a starter, this is the largest sand island in the world, and I've been going up there from Brisbane for the last 5yrs during the tailor fishing season (blokes trips), and still not seen it all!

If you do a 'yahoo search' there's heaps of links, but you could start here http://www.dkd.net/fraser/

I always camp on the eastern side of the island on the beach at Dundaburra, but if you're with the family, there's heaps of accomodation on the eastern side at Cathedral Beach, Happy Valley, Orchid Beach to the north, and of course Kingfisher Bay Resort of the western side (but a 1hr drive over 4WD tracks to get to the beaches on the east)

We stayed at Happy Valley with the family last Easter - fantastic accomodation at very reasonable rates. Contact Buck n Carol's Fraser Island Holiday Rentals. PO Box 5224, Torquay, Qld 4655. Phone: (07) 4127 9454. Fax: (07) 4127 9454. Contact: Carol ...ask 'em about the "big place upstairs with the views to the pacific"!

Best part about Happy Valley (or Dundaburra) is that they are close to the most common and picturesque parts of the island - north, south, and west!

I could go on forever about Fraser, and I'm more than happy to provide any info that will help you get the most out of a trip to Fraser emoticon If the thread gets going, maybe we should load up some photos for you?

Re: Fraser Island, Qld

Great link, thanks Brian, and some good hints there. One of the problems is that google type searches turn up so much information you don't know where to start.
We have three weeks - just my wife and I - we do tend to find a good spot and stay a while. Tenting should be ok for some of the time, but we might investigate established accomodation if the budget allows. Any comments re November at Fraser? David M

David, certainly for established accomodation, I would absolutely recommend Buck & Carol, and I would recommend Happy Valley, simply as it's your first trip to Fraser, and you can get to all the great locations from there without driving for hours on end - like a base point if you will. Lookup info on: Eli Creek, Lake Mackenzie, Central Station, Indian Head, Champagne Pools, Waddy Point, Orchid Beach, Nagala Rocks, Sandy Cape Lighthouse, Cathedrals, Maheno Wreck.....and that's just for starters!

For camping, Dundaburra Campsite is now fully "dingo proofed" (not that dingos are in epidemic proportions, buy you must be aware of their presence) - full facilities here, but you must book via www.epa.qld.gov.au. If you wish to camp on the beach, you will find some raised dunes to camp behind exactly 3km south of Dundaburra.

November will be quite warm (28c average), and fantastic for Fraser! hope that helps in some small way..........brian
