Stockton Beach. Oct 23 (OLD)

Hi all
My wife Robyn and I are heading your way in late October. The plan is to drive to Port Stephens area and then spend 2 weeks working our way back to QLD.
Have heard a lot about Stockton Beach and would like to explore the area. What sort of 4wd experience is required? Robyn has driven on beaches on the Sunshine coast but would still probably come under beginner.
Any suggestions from local knowledge on what to see and do on NSW mid coast would be gratefully received.
Thanks
DarrylM

Re: Stockton Beach difficulty rating?

Hi! Darryl & Robyn

This is Dennis & Val.

We live at Newcastle, 30-40 Minutes drive from Stockton Beach. We are familiar with the beach although we still need to explore a lot more of it.The area, dunes & beach are very busy with vehicles & buggys on weekends.

The Beach is 20-30 kms long with numerous Dunes & tracks. The X-Trail handles it O.K. with tyre pressure about 15-18 psi.

There is 2 access points.

1. Lavis Lane:
Near Williamtown Airport
Southern access,Usually very soft sand & narrow track with no scratches for about 500 metres then easy going to the beach.Follow other people's tracks.
X-Trail handles it O.K.( 2nd Gear with a bit of momentum ) about 1 km to the beach/water.

2.Birubi Point:
Northern Access, usually quite hard sand & numerous tracks lead to beach.Easy drive onto beach, follow other tracks, quite busy area but no problems for beginners. Garage 2 minutes away to pump tyres up if needed.

Ideal trip is to enter in Lavis Lane, spend some time on beach & checkout " Sygna " Wreck, go up & down sand dunes etc. & continue north along to Birubi Point.

We would be quite happy to accompany you on such a trip along the beach or show you the area. It is a great place to enjoy.

Dennis & Val

Re: Stockton Beach difficulty rating?

I'm sure others would be keen as well...

We could make this into the next organised X-Trail event.

It's a little short notice, but we could give it a try, if you know exactly what day you intend on going to Stockton...

If others aren't keen on such a trip, I was already planning on organising a day to Boat Harbour in Kurnell (Sydney), which would be similar to Stockton I imagine (it has lots of sand dunes and is virtually advertised as a "4WD funpark" emoticon ). See the Events Forum on here for more info on Boat Harbour.

Re: Stockton Beach difficulty rating?

Hi Darryl & Rich

Sorry we haven't replied earlier but have been very busy and have'nt been on the computer.

Received your PM and am quite happy to go to Stockton Beach on either 23rd or 24th October whichever suits you best.

It would be great if the other X-Trailers could come along as well and see the great beaches we have to offer in this area. A convoy of X-Trails would be an impressive site on Stockton Beach.

We could meet at Lavis Lane a couple of hundred metres along from the Service Station at Williamtown at say 10.00 am then spend a few hours on the beach, dunes and then head up north and exit at Birubi Point.

Anyone who is interested, plese let us know and we can forward a map showing exact meeting point, and directions etc.

Dennis & Val

Hey Dennis and Val, sounds great. Saturday 23 Oct would suit us best as we still have accommodation in the area that night. If sunday is better for most others we can do that also.
Thanks

Re: Stockton Beach difficulty rating?

We (me, wife, kiddies, xtrail) might be interesting in this one.

We took the lot on the first part of the Yengo trek in the "4wd treks around Sydney" book. From St Albans to Bucketey. Very easy, there were even sports cars doing it.
St Albans is a nice spot for a cleansing ale though. And the kids werent doing the "are we there yet?", but did give us the "where are we going?" a few times!. emoticon

My Mrs is "considering" Stockton at the moment.

Can't make it either day now, but I'm sure everyone that goes will have agreat time.

I was going to start a new thread for this in the Events section - it would be a good idea (or move this thread to there).
