Re: we lost a soft roader comparison

Imitation is the best form of compliment. Four years later other companies learning from the XTrail success ought to be able to improve their act. I'd be surprised if there are not more comparisons in which upgraded vehicle models match or better the XTrail until the XTrail is itself significantly updated. I still believe it was the best buying decision at the time for me (and like Jalal, I was hunting for a second-hand Pathie when it was pointed out the XTrail was the same size and better specc'd for what I was going to do with it).

Re: we lost a soft roader comparison

On the two points,
I remember reading on the forum one persons experience with what sounded like a good dealer in Gympie, that looked into the overheating problem. The answers seemed to be that:
1. Do not leave in Lock mode, but also
2. If sand gets between the ABS sensors it fouls up the operation and will go into overheat mode!
His advice was a quick spray of water on the sensors and away he went on a one week sand holiday with no more faults.
I reckon if you've followed the auto mode rule, cleaning the sensors may be the solution. He suggested a spray with water in an atomiser would do the trick.

On, the ST-S power loss. Hi-Tech should write to Nissan and see if they can get anything in writing from Nissan that states fitting the Cat-back system (Twins) does'nt void warranty. If they got this, and could prove a power gain and meet emissions, well I reckon they would get alot of buyers from new XTrail owners.
Better still Nissan Aus should import exys without the exhausts and then fit the Hi-Tech exhaust in country! And win back the buyers looking to tow and get up sand dunes!

Oh, and if Hi-Tech got this cool deal, I'd be happy to recieve an exhaust as payment for my cool idea

Nice plan/dream you got going there Brendon LOL emoticon

Nissan would NEVER allow this to happen!

If they wanted you to have all that power in the first place, they would have produced the exy with such an effective and less restrictive system to start with, but cost cutting is something that every car manufacturer will look for and to have the Hi-Tech system on every exy as standard will hit their pocket direct, the result is that this idea will never be implemented.

Sorry to shatter your dreams like that, so I guess you gonna need to queue-up and put your name down on the wish list for this mod.

Having said the above, the first ST-S owner to try the Hi-Tech system will be given a special treatment by Hi-Tech and this will include a free dyno test.

I better start mentioning these details in the corresponding thread, so it is documented accordingly.

Hi AussieMini

In relation to your question about what gear i was in?..... My exy is an auto and kept it in drive. I noticed the gears changing between second and third occassionally so i put it in second gear. I've read above about the ABS sensor needing a spray of water occasionally.!!!

Cheers

Domenic

Re: we lost a soft roader comparison

Guys is there any solid evidence that the power loss is just from the 2nd cat in the exhaust?
I have spoken to people in the performance scene who all agree that catyalatic converters do not retrict power by much at all and in some instances nothing if pipe diameter is unchanged.
There are a few other vechicles that had to comply to the 2006 emissions but they had losses of around 3kw.
My gut feelng is that there might be an timing/ecu re-program to go along with the second cat.
Looking foward to see some dyno results, this will confirm it all for sure.
If it happens to bethe cat Nissan needs a Slaaaaap on their heads for taking the easy way out to lose 9kw and 15nm which a huge numbers in my book.

Nothing else apart from 2 cat converters and two O2 sensors have changed in the ST-S set-up (not to my knowledge) but I believe the ECU had to be re-calibrated to take the appropriate readings of two Oxygen Sensors instead of one.

A 10KW loss is a massive loss of power indeed.

Re: we lost a soft roader comparison

Back on the subject of the '4x4 Australia' soft-roader comparisions, I am ALWAYS sceptical of these 'independant' tests. Considering that a Toyota vehicle normally wins is proof of that. And if it doesn't win, then there are normally a host of excuses offered.
This topic has been discussed on numerous other forums, including the 4x4 and 4wd monthly forum, the apparent Toyota bias that both magazines display, but I guess you have to please the sponsors..don't you.

I like my X-Trail and wouldn't swap it for any other 'softie' on the market. Might swap it for an Tourag, but that's about it. emoticon

Why not go for it's big brother, the Porsche Cayeene.. hmm
 emoticon

By the way i totally agree with you, i wouldn't want any other soft roader, also someone mentioned earlier that the x-trail is an ugly suv... i think it's one of the best looking softies on the market still to this date. Such a tough looking car compared to the rest of them.

Re: we lost a soft roader comparison

How can they seriously compare them with eachother, especially the Exy.
Because all 3 cars have been updated with more power since their first release. The Exy has unfortunately been toned down a few kw instead.
Currently (as per info on the net) some small differences between the Exy and 'the new 2006 RAV4'are;
RAV4 is 90mm longer, 50mm wider and 35mm longer wheelbase. Has 2 extra KW and 2 years longer anti corrosion warranty. Oh! almost forgot... also comes with Driver vanity mirror emoticon I am not sure how these differences could ultimately decide it's superior capabilties over the Exy. It still tows 500kg less braked gross weight than the X-Trail.
The only thing I do envy just a little bit is that the RAV4 comes with Steering wheel mounted remote audio controls emoticon
Personally I wouldn't buy a RAV4, the new ones (in my personal opinion ofcourse) looks a tiny bit like a raised up Honda Odyssey....hmmm.
