Re: Hi-Tech X-Trail Extractors/Headers & Full Exhaust System
I guess we now come to a stage where this has to be tested to see if the db level is acceptable or not.
Yes, we need someone in Sydney to be the guinea pig for sure, as the set-up can be corrected and optimized based on the first test on the ST-S.
Having said the above I know that the Canadian guys fitted 2 resonators with their new exhaust set-up, as they found that using one was too loud (some actually like it that way)

Re: Hi-Tech X-Trail Extractors/Headers & Full Exhaust System
Hi Ben,
It takes one full day to fit the full system, meaning from 9am to 5pm with a lunch break and a short Q&A session between you and them
They only need to remove the fans at the front to slide the new extractors into position.

Re: Hi-Tech X-Trail Extractors/Headers & Full Exhaust System
Hi ST-S Owners,
I can now confirm that the Hi-Tech twin exhaust set-up has been successfully fitted to a brand new ST-S and the owner noticed a great improvement in power.
The owner of that ST-S decided however to remove the second cat. converter from under the car and that did not create any problems or generate any error codes on the ECU.
Once the second cat. converter is removed, the existing twin exhaust system fits perfectly in place without any modification required to it. It bolts right on with no problems.

Re: Hi-Tech X-Trail Extractors/Headers & Full Exhaust System
Rich, the Hi-Tech system is not loud at all and certainly is not breaking any Db level regulations. Although on the STS a cat was removed to fit it, the system has two resonators and the muffler (at least mine does but it was the first custom one rather than the kit they have now). You hardly notice it is there.
The bigger concern with doing this to an ST-S would be emissions, the 2nd cat was there to comply with stricter regulations brought in early this year, removing it obviously means you no longer comply. Might be an issue at the 3 year mark.

Re: Hi-Tech X-Trail Extractors/Headers & Full Exhaust System
Hi Rich,
AS I stated previously in my report, The Hi-Tech system is fully EPA compliant, this includes db levels, I wouldn't have fitted a noisy exhaust system to my exy cause I hate loud exhausts.
No dyno tests were done on the ST-S as the owner fitted the system himself at home. (he's not from Sydney) but he said he can certainly feel the increase in power which I presume came from removing the second cat. and fitting the twins. Basically that means that the ST-S should now be running with a power equal to the pre 2006 models and that is 132KW more or less.

That is correct Adam and it is a point I and Hi-Tech clearly highlighted to the owner of the ST-S. It was his decision to do so and he mentioned that his dealer didn't have a problem with it either. Although I doubt that will be the case should a warranty claim need to be made. He stated that he can always put the second cat. back if needed.
The main concern I had was the ECU behavior should the second cat. be removed and surprisingly it did not register the absence of the second cat, because it is still receiving the signal from both O2 sensors (they have two of them) OK.
Also Adam, the Hi-Tech template of the twins comes with two resonators as standard.

Re: Hi-Tech X-Trail Extractors/Headers & Full Exhaust System
OK, I am VERY impressed with this mod!!
The extra power is very noticeable and my on-board dyno (Pioneer Vehicle Dynamics Processor) that estimates kw at the wheels, also agrees! Before the extractors I had the cat-back system and my VDP was quite consistently giving me a peak of 73kw (at the wheels remember) which is probably about right. Now in just the first week of having the extractors I have already peaked at 92kw!!
There has also been a great sound improvement, it is louder but also deeper and really growls like a V6. With just the cat-back I was getting quite a drone on deceleration (engine breaking - I have a manual) as it came down the revs, this is not uncommon with aftermarket exhaust systems. That droning has gone completely now, it is very quiet on deceleration - just louder on acceleration.
There is one thing that I feel is important and everyone considering this needs to be aware of. The factory cat converter is part of the extractors and sits up very high at the front of the engine. The Hi-Tech system puts the cat under the engine which as exhaust physics goes it a much better location. However, cats don't like being submersed in water, they have a ceramic core that can crack if the temperature changes too fast. They also get very hot during use. Nissan state that the exy should only be taken through water crossings up to the wheel axles (IIRC) which would mean the factory cat is still above water and safe. The Hi-Tech cat would be one of the first parts of the car submersed.
Now this is not an issue for me as I don't go offroad much and certainly would not attempt a water crossing unless I had to. For those that seriously go offroad you should consider this aspect of the system. Replacing the cat is not a cheap exercise.
The power this engine kicks out now is great. I find myself hitting the rev limiter at the moment though, as the revs climb much quicker than I am used to!! Also had it in a very nice power slide on the way to work this morning.
