Yeah Rich, I guess that's what you get for living in WRXland! aka Bankstown!!

In answer to your question/comment Jalal, yes you do have to carry a engineering certificate. It looks similar to a rego slip.

I had a Soarer a couple of years back with a blower on it and this was my "out" card when I got pulled over. (And that was pretty regularly with the blower whine!)

For the extra couple of $$$'s I'd say a certificate was worth it, even if it's to wave in front of the boys in blue!!

I noted Dave4x4 saying the pedal height changed. This doesn't sound right. Was the pedal at the right height with the original hoses? The only difference should be a more "solid" feel under load, nothing else. Hmmmm!

Re: Brake Upgrades & Brake Dust

I think Dave was refering to the height of the pedal when fully depressed.

Normally, the brake lines swell slightly so there is more fluid in the pressurised system. For this to happen, the pedal would travel further.

With braided brake lines, the pedal would not need to go so far to the floor for the same braking effect.

Dave, it is interesting that you say that.

I thought the same until a couple of months ago when I was in the UK and rented a Renault Megane, the first time I went for the brakes I nearly put myself through the windscreen!!

After driving that for a week and then jumping back in my X-Trail I nearly caused an accident because the brakes are so ineffective in comparison. They felt like drum brakes compared to the Megane.

I think I will supply some better pads to the dealer to fit at the next service and look into these braided brake lines.

Hi ppl i think that the renault has a different braking system that use a pump assist system that makes the brakes work where we use vaccum assist and they do not have any flexible brake lines it is all steel pipes of a smaller bore size

Re: Brake Upgrades & Brake Dust

Our Mazda 3 is like that in comparison to the XTRAIL. The pedal is quite hard and touchie. However the XTRAIL brakes actually stop the car just the same, there is just more pedal travel.
I guess we are used to swapping between the two different cars now.
It's to do with the amount of "power assist" like the size of the vacuum booster, and the bore size of the master cylinder and so on....
If you want to find out about a Renault Megan, check a Nissan Tiida !

Hi All,

Note for the forum Gestapo: I did a search on this topic and there is not much mentioned.

How much brake dust should I expect from my brand new 2006 STS and should I "burn in" the brake pads.

My front wheels are looking grotty after 300kms.

I had my pads changed at the Nissan dealer at the 40,000 km service in Jan 2006 - they had plenty of wear left on them - 3 or 4mm, but were making weird rubbing noises.

The new pads have not had the same dust problems - and were acceptable from the word go and have remained so after 6000 km more.

So maybe Nissan has fixed the problem somewhere between the stock you got in your 2006 build model, and what my dealer used.

With hindsight, I'm left thinking that the original pads just weren't up to scratch - the dust being one sign, and lasting 40K due to something beside wearing them out being another sign of some goof-up in the design or manufacture.

Still, it's hard to recommend that anyone go with the Nissan's premium price pads if they can't stand behind them a bit better than this.

I've been holding off posting this, just to be sure that the dust cure wasn't temporary !

Re: Brake Upgrades & Brake Dust

Hi Guys,

For those of you who are due for disc/rotors replacement for one reason or another, I have made contact with Disc Brakes Australia and they currently have the standard slotted discs available for the xtrail.

Part Numbers:

Front Discs DBA-573 (standard slotted)
Rear Disc DBA-574 (standard slotted)

I have only priced the front ones, as the rear ones should last you for a very long time. The cheapest price I managed to obtain was from Autobarn $149 each. Repco and Supercheap also sell them or can order them, but they're more expensive through them.

DBA also confirmed the availability of a custom made 4000 Series Slotted Performance Discs. The part number for the 4000 series is exactly the same as above but with 4 before the number. The front ones are priced at $215 each. These are made on a non-returnable basis and take a week or two to manufacture.

Re: Brake Upgrades & Brake Dust

Hi Guys,

I spoke to my local mechanic who had my discs machined about the DBA slotted discs and he said they're a good BUY expensive choice.

Apparently there is performance place not far from where I live that can slot the factory discs for much cheaper and they will do exactly the same job.

Anyone heard of this before?

Jalal, some disks you can slot, others you can't. Depends on how much "meat" there is. I have tried slotting some disks and had no problems, others the disk just weren't thick enough.

The guy doing the slotting will know. Rule of thumb, the slotting must not be deeper than the minimum thickness of the disk.

Re: Brake Upgrades & Brake Dust

Thanks Andrew,

It is good to know that it is an option to consider. Not with my discs that have just been machined and lost quite a bit of "meat" though LOL emoticon

Others with much fresher factory discs may want to consider this option indeed.
