Radiator Protection

Couldn't find a topic on this so I thought I'd start one! Thought I'd post some pics of the grill mesh installed behind grill & bumper openings where stones are likely to damage the radiator/aircon evaporator & auto trans cooler in my case. In the pics you may also notice I have actually opened up the blocked off diamond areas in the centre section of the grill. This was done using my Dremil tool to help with airflow to radiator, as when you have driving lights fitted they tend to block both open areas on either side of the grill.

Bought the grill mesh in a sheet from Repco, cost of $33. Very cheap insurance!! The mesh is actually held in situ by some small cable ties, very simple/cheap mod but also very effective!!

Cheers Phil

Thanks Phil,

It was a good idea to create a dedicated thread for this mod, as the previous posts were burried inside the "bash plate and lift kit" thread and hard to find.

I'll move the other posts here.

Hi Series I owners,

You guys can have a radiator protection as well emoticon

My weekend project included a trip to supercheap auto and I stumbled across this wire mesh for $29.50

After some fiddling around for about an hour to get the correct size, I managed to stuff it up emoticon and cut it too short, but this was rectified later.

I had to remove the front grille to be able to slide the mesh from behind and slot it in just in front of the radiator, where it's being held by 6-7 existing screws.

I have re-inforced it as well with a couple of cable ties, so it wont rattle.

There are many colours available of this mesh (black, blue, red and chrome) and of course you know what colour would I chose emoticon

So here is the end result and I can drive safely now, knowing that my radiator wont be taking any nasty stone hits.

Series II owners are lucky indeed to have THIS on offer, which is nice and practical solution to protect your radiator.

I wish they made these for Series I emoticon

Guys,

I too took the advise of this forum and install some protection for the flimsy radiator. Series 1, same products used as mentioned.

Re: Radiator Protection

Excellent stuff Dave Image

You've done it the professional way and decided to take the bumper off. I didn't need to do this, as the opening in my front bumper is bigger (in series I) so I still managed to get to the bolts ok.

Well done mate!

Here's mine. It took me about half an hour and the result was much better than I originally thought it would be. I used the method where I cut the piece to size by meauring from the inside bottom of the front guard, to the top of the openings. then cut the width to overlap the openings and still fit in to the sides. I was then able to tuck the base into the bottom of the guard and zip tie to the top.

Cheers

Re: Radiator Protection

Brett & Jalal,

I'm going to do this too but want to know which bolts/screws you undid to slide the mesh behind the grille and to fix it in behind the lower guard. Also, what was the size of mesh you needed to cover the area ?

I know it was quite a while ago but I'm sure a quick look at the front and you'll remember.

Re: Radiator Protection

Kev, you will need to remove the front grille completely to be able to slot the mesh behind it and all the way down.

The front grille is held by 4 plastic push in type of clips at the top part near the radiator and 4 locking pins going into the bumper. To remove the grille, take off these 4 push in pins and lift the grille up.

I can't remember the size of the mesh, but the packaged one from Supercheap auto will be enough and you can then cut it to size.
