Re: WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

Adam,

I will be anxiously awaiting the result of your phone call to NRMA.

To tell you the truth I totally forgot about notifying NRMA about the "twins" mod emoticon

Every other chrome bit that I have, side steps, nudge and the rest of it was covered fine with no problems at all.

Re: WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

siukalo, $15,000 stereo? I'd double-check your policy doesn't have one less "0" on it emoticon I don't think the "20% of vehicle's value" for modifications applies to Just Cars as you stated does for AAMI (and possibly others). But if yours is $15,000 that would make it approx 40-50% of the vehicle's value?!

Our policy (Just Cars) lists the current market value and also the purchase price. I have all the modifications (including dealer-fitted options) except the sub box, as it's out of the car most of the time anyway. FYI, I also got a quote from AAMI and the premium was more expensive through them!

Jalal, I don't like your chances with NRMA - they've never insured any of my previous cars and they are really stingy when it comes to modifications. They would only insure "up to 1.5inch lowered" so my "2inch lowered" at the time was a no-no. I found GIO to be just as bad as NRMA.

Re: WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

Thanks Rich,

Your post has just prompted me to give NRMA a call a guess what?

The twins have been added to my policy with no change to my premium whatsoever. emoticon

It was a funny moment when I was trying to describe the mod to the lady over the phone and told her the reasons behind the mod (i.e. our muffler being too low for off-road trips) and there was a moment of silence on the other end and the lady said "And you're adding this smaller muffler with twin outlets to the '89 Corolla?" HaHaHa

She was looking at my wife's policy instead of mine LOL

I said nope, it's the exy and we laughed emoticon

She said she found it hard to believe that am taking an '89 Corolla off-road!

She did ask me if the cat. converter has been changed in anyway and was happy to approve it when I said it was a Cat-back mod.

I guess we will get in trouble when the time comes to do the header and Cat mod emoticon

The twins have been approved and will show on my policy as "body modification" with an explanatory note about the details mod.

Touch wood, I never had any problems with NRMA for any of my previous cars.

Re: WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

I am waiting a call back from Suncorp to discuss this issue. Will let you all know the results. I am lucky in that I am doing this before I have done the mods so thanks for the heads up to the OP...

Re: WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

The ol' mods and insurance caper.

Now the proud owner of an X-Trail, insurance is great..

If you think insuring a lightly modded X-Trail is painful, spare a thought for me whose previous car (traded it for the X-Trail) was a MY01 Subaru WRX with an APS RT Kit, plus a few other goodies, pulling 300KW @ flywheel and roughly 250KW at all 4 wheels.

Fast = Bloody Oath (0-100km 3.9 sec calder Nov '03)

Insurance = $4000.00 + / Year emoticon

Re: WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

Heath Lambert Group, Shannons & Justcar cover just about anything. They also offer a cheaper premium but larger excess, which can be seen as a reward for good drivers.

Thankfully, I am in the 25+ age group now. I was paying nearly $2000 a year (with a $2000 excess) on my $22,000 SSS Pulsar with a rating 1. Now dropped to $600 a year!
