XTrail/Pathfinder
A few times I've noticed mention of the Pathfinder as biggerthan the X Trail. When I went to look at a Pathfinder, the dealer had them parked side by side lined up.
Yes, the overall length of Pathfinder is 130mm longer, mostly in the bumper bars; width is an extra 55 mm, again mostly wheel arch flaring (IMHO); height is 35mm higher for ST, but 25mm lower for Ti - i.e. the difference is in the wheels. Carrying capacity is 470 kgs compared to the X Trail's 565 kgs. Rated towing capacity is the same.
The Pathy is built heavier (and uses more fuel, bigger turning circle) and has the low ratio so is able to do some things an X Trail can't, but I think you'll be disappointed if you think you can fit more in it. Be interesting to see how they each survive a few hundred kms of corrugated road loaded up, but bigger?? Only if you want to be technical about it.
We bought the X Trail, anyway. Better for about 98% of what we might like to do, and we mightn't get around to that 2% anyway.
PS before you get out the blowtorch, this is just for a bit of campfire chit chat.
David.

Re: XTrail/Pathfinder
I should say that we considered a Pathy before the X-Trail, but the main things we decided against it were some that you mentioned - fuel being the main factor (6cyl is always going to guzzle more than a 4cyl), and I think price was considerably higher than the X-Trail, too.
I got underneath both of them at the dealership and while I didn't have a tape measure, I did manage to guesstimate that the lowest point under the Pathfinder was the diff @ the rear (mostly the case for "real" 4WD's), which turned out the be about the same height as the lowest point under the X-Trail (muffler). So everywhere else on the floorpan of the Pathy is higher than the X-Trail, and when following the Pathy on our travels offroad, I keep an eye on the diff to see any potential problems for us...
I should also mention that the ride quality in the X-Trail is much better than the Pathy, especially offroad. But maybe my experience is swayed by the fact that I was a passenger in the Pathy, and not the driver.
One final thing is that the tow-bar on the Pathy sticks out alot further than the one on our X-Trail; where the Pathy scrapes on some dips in the road, we don't drag the rear end at all...
If there's one thing I'd liked to have seen on the X-Trail that is on the Pathy, it's the flip-up back window. I think it's a great idea!
I just know Jalal is going to comment about the new Pathy

Re: XTrail/Pathfinder
You guessed right Rich
I also didn't favour the "current" shape Pathfinder over the xtrail when I test drove both, mainly because of the price difference and the shape which I did not like.
I will have completely different considerations when time comes to step into the "new" shape Pathfinder that is definitely bigger and higher than the X-Trail and I didn't need a tape measure when I saw them both at the Sydney Motor Show
The Pathfinder has the 3rd row of seats which is a good option to have (for my needs)
I guess we can talk about this again in July, when the new Pathy goes on sale.

Re: XTrail/Pathfinder
The new Pathfinder is longer by 230 mm than an XTrail, 90mm wider, and 190mm higher (but that may be in the wheels). The third row of seats for those who need them is a factor, but the kerb weight has leapt to 2230 kgs (XTrail: 1435; current Pathy 1865). 600 kgs is a lot of extra weight to move around the whole time unless you need the heavier vehicle. This is more significant I think than engine size - a lightly loaded six cylinder engine will not necessarily use more fuel than a heavily loaded four cylinder, but to move over half a tonne extra the whole time requires extra energy from somewhere. The specs. of the new pathy do seem to move it closer to about half way between the Xtrail and the Patrol (2500kgs).
And the current Pathfinder price is about $10,000 more than an Xtrail.

Re: XTrail/Pathfinder
Interesting that the drive system seems to be reversed - rear wheel drive most of the time, and front wheels added when needed.
I notice that the X Trail gets more stars in their review of it though. David.

Yes, that is interesting for sure, but I guess it's related to the size and weight of the engine. It'll be too much for the front wheels to handle.

Correct. However the xtrail was compared to cars/SUVs in it's class, the Pathfinder is competing against the big brothers, like LandCruisers, Discovery..etc.
Yep, read the part about the "bling" factor "the 'bling' factor is limited to the chrome laden nose"
I guess this opens-up for another chroming project in 5 years or so time LOL

Re: XTrail/Pathfinder
I've been following the 05 Pathy news with great interest. I guess you've just got to look at the sales figures of the Prado and Pajero to work out why Nissan has upsized the Pathfinder this time around.
Even if it will be driven mainly by soccer mums, the 7 seat capacity is clearly a necessity in the segment.
Personally I feel the biggest news with the new Pathy is the 2.5L turbo diesel option, which I will seriously consider next time around.
Cheers
Brenton
