X-Trail Diff Breathers & Diff Oil

I was into the local 4x4 store the other day and noticed “Diff Breather Hoses” on the shelf.

I’ve never seen these before, and my work colleague indicated that these are required when driving through high levels of water to stop water getting into the diff.

I’m not sure if we have diff vents on the X-Trail, has anybody heard of this?

I guess for those of you who are concerned with the engine air intake being poorly designed, perhaps you need to consider diff breathers for those water crossings?

Kind Regards

I am pretty sure that the diff breathers on the xtrail do actually extend up higher (from memory when I think we checked out Rich's)

Just find the breather (all cars have them) on top of the diff it should have a hose attached running up into the body unlike some cars (including the old hilux that just have a "grease nipple" looking vent.

The idea is to keep the breather outlet higher so it doesnt get clogged with mud and things and above the water level. The diff oil heats up just driving along normal roads and the air in their needs to expand and contract for temp change. If you hit water the diff temp suffers a quick change to cold and therefore contracts sucking air in. If the breathers are below water level you can guess what gets sucked in instead.

Even with a breather extensions it is always good to stop and give them a chance to cool before crossings and regularily check the the ends arent clogged and the breathers are in good shape and attached. The other thing is that if the inlets are clogged they cant expand or contract even when not offroad

It costs me $90 to replace my rear dif oil after the hose came loose and I sucked water in.

There are some examples for the diffs and gearboxs HERE and
HERE AS WELL

Shane,

I wouldn't bother. I'm pretty sure this is the Air Con drain hose in your photo. emoticon

Cheers

I am pretty sure we followed your front diff breather that day down at Kurnell. Just cant remember where it came out.
Shane, it should start at the top of your diff. If it has an extension it should be a small hose running off the top of the diff and up into the body, if I am wrong (my memory is fading with age) there should at least be a small vent sitting on top of the diff. Like a little valve or grease nippling looking thing
There should be a pic in one of the repair manuals that are floating around

Re: X-Trail Diff Breathers

The front transaxle breather emerges just to the left of the air cleaner box, and is shaped like an inverted "u" having an open end just above the smaller box hanging off the side of the air cleaner box. Its just under the breather tube that goes from the air inlet to the top of the engine. This puts it about a hands width below the main air intake and about level with the top of the engine and injectors.
The rear one is more of a problem to see. You can see it clipped to a small tube welded onto the cross member if you get your head past the muffler and look above the diff on the driver's side. The clip here seems like the pipe might go higher through the cross member, but I don't know - couldn't see any clues under the seats or lifting out the spare wheel and foam blocks. If this is the height of it, its about level with the floor well where the spare wheel is and at risk from water above the top of the wheel rim.
Will try to post the diagrams from the manual - I've saved them as j-pegs.
David.

Re: X-Trail Diff Breathers

I've always been concerned about the height of the rear breather hose... I think I read somewhere that it goes up into the spare wheel well - which doesn't seem to be very high, compared to the height of the front one!
