X-Trail Diff Breathers & Diff Oil
I was into the local 4x4 store the other day and noticed “Diff Breather Hoses” on the shelf.
I’ve never seen these before, and my work colleague indicated that these are required when driving through high levels of water to stop water getting into the diff.
I’m not sure if we have diff vents on the X-Trail, has anybody heard of this?
I guess for those of you who are concerned with the engine air intake being poorly designed, perhaps you need to consider diff breathers for those water crossings?
Kind Regards

Re: X-Trail Diff Breathers
Shane,
I wouldn't bother. I'm pretty sure this is the Air Con drain hose in your photo.
Cheers

Re: X-Trail Diff Breathers
The front transaxle breather emerges just to the left of the air cleaner box, and is shaped like an inverted "u" having an open end just above the smaller box hanging off the side of the air cleaner box. Its just under the breather tube that goes from the air inlet to the top of the engine. This puts it about a hands width below the main air intake and about level with the top of the engine and injectors.
The rear one is more of a problem to see. You can see it clipped to a small tube welded onto the cross member if you get your head past the muffler and look above the diff on the driver's side. The clip here seems like the pipe might go higher through the cross member, but I don't know - couldn't see any clues under the seats or lifting out the spare wheel and foam blocks. If this is the height of it, its about level with the floor well where the spare wheel is and at risk from water above the top of the wheel rim.
Will try to post the diagrams from the manual - I've saved them as j-pegs.
David.
