Is it better acceleration, fuel economy, idle...etc, etc.

Acceleration has been greatly improved. Acceleration is now smooth and responsive right through the rev range, with few flat spots. It's still slightly sluggish between 2500-3000, but greatly improved over what I remember. From 3500 - redline, it flies! Even without pressing harder on the pedal, it quite literally feels like a turbo kicks in and the car just takes off. Overtaking is a breeze, even on steep hills.
Fuel economy is just settling down now.. I've been in the middle of moving home, so have been doing many weeks worth of fully loaded driving and towing. It's only been in the past fortnight that I've been able to get reliable figures. I've also switched to Premium Unleaded. I'm now averaging between 9.4 - 10 ltr per 100k. Good yes, but nothing too special really.
I should note that since this mod, I have really noticed a lot of torque steer!! Not cool, but maybe a clear sign of the increased power?

Bored again and decided to look at the air temp differences between the stock air intake and with the end intake piece removed (as I considered doing for winter). In order to get roughly an ideal setup, I allowed the car to idle for 1 minute, and then drove it along a local road, which allowed me to keep a steady 60kph. Well the temps were a big surprise.
The first figure is with the first section of air intake tube removed. The second is complete stock air intake.
Air temp recorded 1/2 way along intake tube, at base of lower air filter box.

It is obvious the the stock intake does act as a mini ram, allowing cool air into the air intake tube, as apposed to the Warm Air Intake model, which is affected by the engines own heat.
What was also surprising was the amount of heat that is collected along the intake tube, as measured in the upper air intake. I guess a method of covering this intake hosing, with the silver insulation may lower this temp, thus giving better performance.
This was not intended to be an exact scientific test, but the results are a good read. I would be extremely keen to see what sort of readings the same test achieved with a CAI system.

I think you mean a short ram set-up, as the CAI with a filter located outside of the car would definitely be getting cold air.

Brett,
May be a silly question but would an intercooler help ?
I don't suppose there would be enough room for the extra piping and it would probably add too much restriction to a naturally-aspirated intake with the extra length.
Just thinking out-of-the-box.

If you want to get an idea on how colder the air coming via a CAI compared to a stock set-up, have a read HERE and then look at this chart.
