Re: Air intake design & modifications

Good stuff Matt, always nice to see some alternatives which we can all compare against each other.

Got some pics to share?

How do you plan to enclose the filter?

Did you buy the pipes or made them yourself?

Please guys, share the information you have (this includes you too Sydo LOL emoticon )

We're all trying to achieve the best possible set-up for our exy and we will be in the best possible position to do so when we share our experience, impressions (good and bad) of what we currently have.

Matt: Please keep an eye on your fuel economy and performance during warmer days and report back if possible.

Will do, its going to be a hot day today so ill take it out for a drive and see how it goes

All ive done so far is taken the airbox out stuck the pod on, put my plan is to move it down between the battery and guard and do an air feed directly to the pod.

Im a bit flat out at work at this time of year,so it may take me a few weeks to get done! but ill post up some more pics and a better report soon

Re: Air intake design & modifications

Hi Guys,

AKAK9 (Andrew) has asked me to post this information on his behalf, as he's having problems with his PC.

Image

The photo I have here is a method of reducing ambient heat around a pod filter from my recent WRX. Basically it’s a sheet of aluminum with some silver backed foam glued to it. (The silver sheet is against the ally.) Cost me a total of about $40. Although I’m a fussy sod and used the ally sheet, it’s not really necessary as the silver backed foam is fairly stiff by itself. This foam can be bought from Clark rubber for a very reasonable price.

This method reduced the intake temperature by around 30 degrees, as tested by a heat probe that I installed.

I had no issue with hot days like some of the other WRXy owners. This sort of set up would easily suit the X-trail.

Andrew

Matt,

Are you going to put in some bonnet grilles like I think the WRX has to let outside air in after you close off the pod filter with the silver-backed foam ?

Re: Air intake design & modifications

I had an almost identical setup to Andrew in my Pulsar (even right down to the materials as well). I had the top open for years before I finally got around to finishing it off and making the top/lid for it as well (after I sold the car!) and the new owner told me it made a big difference afterwards. The topless heatshield/box wasn't a good seal to the bonnet, so it still allowed heat through.

Re: Air intake design & modifications

just a little up date on the pod.....

the heat soak is noticable, but only a little. But even when is very hot( i did a 150k round trip in 30+ deg temp) it is still going quicker than before with the panel filter.

There has been very little fuel consumpion difference. I dont record my fuel usage, but i do reset my trip meter with every tank and there has been no difference.

I will still be moving the pod and using a heat sheild very soon

Im very happy with it emoticon

Re: Air intake design & modifications

Matt,
Like the set-up mate, but obviously the hot air could be a concern. Is there any information on whether the CAI outperforms this sort of set-up, due to the difference in air temperature, but I guess there is less chance of hyrdrolock.

Has anyone considered just removing the restrictive end piece of the air intake, which leaves just a small piece of tubing running into the base of the air filter box.

Re: Air intake design & modifications

Im sure a full on CAI is better, but if we can do a heat shield and a pod i cant see much difference between the 2 set ups.
