Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Righto, piccies ready. Here's what the camera looks like on the bumper: Image
I know, I know, it needs a wash. The camera could go on the rego plate but this would require running wiring all the way from the reverse lights, into the rear door.

Here's a piccie of the GPS in the dash. Image
It's in 'night mode' so the colours are a bit different, but you get the idea. I mounted it here using the supplied rear plate, with double-sided tape holding it firmly. When at the shops, I just pull the GPS out of the plate and put it in the storage bin away from prying eyes.

All told, Im very happy with it. This unit even has Bluetooth so I can talk on the phone without the headset.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Very nice GPS unit Daniel, but the camera needs to be mounted higher for sure if you want to see anything after driving in the rain for a while. The lower section of the bumper is the section that gets dirty much faster than the rego plate, where this camera is supposed to be mounted.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Gday all,

I am in the situation of debating whether to go with a camera/display set up or a reverse parking sensor array. Like other posts i have been seriously considering putting a white LED in the european fog light "blank" in the rear bumper, to assist the Boss when reversing. Probably do it regardless...."safety" you know!
Camera the go, or sensors fine?
Any particular brands for sensor arrays that work well (tried links Jalal bit way too old by now emoticon!! slowly catchin up! )
Have checked out Ebay/superc*ap etc however would prefer to get one thats got some "user experience" behind it!
Any recommendations?

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Dave,

I have only seriously considered the reversing sensors after reversing into a pole within 2 days of buying my brand new exy (ouch!!!), so it is good that you're thinking about this modification as well.

After having these sensors on my exy for close to 5 years, I can't live without them, especially where I park near work which is always a squeeze type of parking.

To be honest, I didn't need the camera at all, as the sound of the sensor is what I rely on, not vision, plus it's less hassles in worrying about cleaning the camera lens and all that (but that is a personal choice)

There are good and cheap reverse parking sensor kits on eBay and almost all of them will do the job just fine. Just make sure you get the 4 sensors kit (and not 2). You can find them in black (not sure about blue) but you can easily colour-code them.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Hi Dave,

My opinion is that the camera is good to see WHAT is behind you but not really for HOW FAR it is behind you.
I know Adam (Rybky) has a reversing camera and hopefully he will add his opinion of it.

Personally I'll be getting the sensors first and maybe add a camera later when I get the DVD/Carputer screen.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

I just purchased this which I thought was a pretty good price - just waiting on it to arrive. I can't see anything behind the ute - I can judge distances, but if there was a child or an animal there, I wouldn't be able to see them. BTW, this site is pretty good! I also grabbed a sheet of LEDs that I am hooking up to the torneau cover to use like an interior door light at night - could also be used for glove boxes like we were investigating once.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

As mentioned above... got one of the cheap options off the DealExtreme website (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4085) and installed it over the weekend. For $94, I'm pretty impressed.

Nice and easy to install - I went for the screw in option instead of double sided tape as I couldn't see that lasting long. Then I just connected to the reversing light wire and had to run the cable for the screen up along the belly following the rest of the wires, poked it through the firewall and all done. I even impressed myself with the short amount of time it took (normally with me, if I think it will take 2 hours I need to set aside a whole day).

Image Image Image

Only problem with the Triton (and others experience it with the X-Trail) is that the factory lights aren't real bright in the dark and it is difficult to see... so I'm going to need more mods to overcome that.

Thought I'd post this cos it gives people an idea what can be done at a cheap price and no reaosn why it can't be done on the ol' Exy. emoticon

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Hey Dave,

Don't know about you but I'll be getting one of the new 8 SENSOR systems (on eBay) which protect the front corners when reversing AND the whole front when nudging into a parking space.

Admin Edit: eBay link removed. Please refer to forum rules in this regard. Thanks.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Tony (cooch t31) or anyone,

I will be fitting parking sensors to my T30 soon and would like to know how the trailer wiring plug was connected with the two extra wires which dis-engage the rear parking sensors.
I would like to make the same mod to my existing trailer wiring socket.
