Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Sorry to hear about your little accident there duxbac, but believe me when I say, you wouldn't have had it with the sensors on.

That was the main reason I fitted mine in after realising how poor the reversing visibility is on the exy and I have to park in such a way each day that every mm counts emoticon

You can score some really good reverse sensor unit off eBay for a very reasonable price.

My advice is to have them fitted professionally to avoid any mistakes that could take place while drilling the rear bumper.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

HI,Jalal,i tried a heat shrink gun on my rear bumper and out it popped.(dent)yipee.Went down to the repairers and quotes are $200 and $245 not too bad have lined it up to be done on thursday and took the dearer quote as i was told you get what you pay for and this person does by far the best job.Have also fitted a cheap pair of sensors.Stick on type, did not want to drill my rear bumper.Made bracket and attached the units to my tow bar goose neck, and after much swearing and cursing, have managed to get them working very well.Very hard to adjust as i was a little low to the ground, and had to bend my brackets up a little as the sensors were picking up my drive as i backed out over my gutter.I have tested my installation and it has no dead spots.I will also fit a switch to the system to turn the unit off as i some times tow a trailer behind the car and it would drive you mad when you are in reverse.Got the unit at supercheap, and it looks supercheap, but it works alright.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Good stuff mate. I'll keep that heat shrink gun trick on my mind for the future emoticon

The only reason I didn't get the wired sensors was that I didn't want to see any wires hanging on my bumper.

Plus you really need 4 sensors to cover all possible angles.

The sensor system I have can be muted if I'm towing something.

Well done, Duxbac. (The sensors, not the event that prompted this move).
Any chance of some pics? I think the vision out the rear is better than the commodore, but that's not saying anything. With young grandchildren around (as well as nasty poles and people who park too close) these seem like a good investment.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Guys,

I just remembered the Polaris Reverse Parking System which is an Australian business available nation-wide and they have an excellent reverse systems starting with the basic in-bumper sensor model and all the way up to a complete system with a reverse camera and monitor.

I stumbled across their stand at the 4WD show in Sydney 2 years ago and was given a demo of their system then.

They have fitters all over Australia and a shop-front in Sydney.

Check them out if you're in the market for the reverse sensors, as they're cheaper than the dealers for sure.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Hi,david m,i am convinced that the one from supercheap is really the bottom of the pile, and there has to be better one out there. The stick on type has only two sensors, which are wide angle, and hard to find the right spot to fix them, and tend to pick up stray readings from any thing.I am convinced the four sensor type are much better and super cheap want about$37 for them.I rushed out in haste and bought the first ones i found and the ones on the internet i think are better and the way to go,as per other comments on the forum.I cannot post a pict, believe me i am the last person in australia to not have a digital camera.Even my grandaughters have one each (digital camera),i will have to catch up with the latest.

Hi,jalal, yes i would give super cheap a miss and the one that you posted seem the way to go.Polaris,i wonder what the price is for the kit?Does the one you have jalal appear to go off with a little beep when it appears that there is no obstruction there.

David M,i have not got a scanner either, just cheap sensors on the rear of my gooseneck, attatched to a metal bracket, that i pop riveted under my gooseneck (towbar)and bent slightly upwards and at a angle .Works not to bad,but as i said there has to be better ones around.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Haven't gone digital myself yet - still get a better result from film and scanning into the computer when needed. Reasonable digital cameras are coming down in price though. Will keep looking into the parking sensors, though. $37 doesn't go far at a panel beaters. Not worried about drilling holes in the bumper - scraped the top of it loading and unloading this weekend (barely noticeable, but I know they're there). Might have to get some touch up paint anyway, so installing black ones and then painting them might do the trick. David M

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

I see on the NRMA website that the XTrail gets 2.5 stars and the commodore 1.5, confirming my view expressed above. David M

The pricing for Polaris system is available on their website I provided above. Just click on "Pricing" and it'll come-up.

The system I have gives me the short beep when I put the gear to "R-Reverse" this to confirm that sensors are working, then if there no object found behind the car it stays silent.

The display I have in front of me, gives me an indication as to which of the 4 sensors has detected an object. Usually the passenger side detects the kerb if I'm reversing too close to it, which also saves me from scratching my rims emoticon

Dave: There isn't much difference between 1.5 and 2.5, as both are not that good, but I find that with sedans you can at least see the edge of the boot, with the exy, it's a complete guess work.

I've been driving the exy for close to 3 years now and I still can't get used to judging the distance when reversing.

I now put my trust in the sensors fully emoticon

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Showed my mate my installation, and he is going down to supercheap to purchase the stick on type,i told him he wants to use the four sensor type but he,informed me he wants a simple installation and easy to remove and the cheap supercheap one will do.I get no stray beeps from the unit now and with the two sensor system adjustment is critical to cover most situations.I have no idea which sensor is alive as i have only a three beep system, which indicates the distance, and the beeping unit does flash.I have located the beeper on the rear wheel arch and have no trouble hearing it.I know that when it does a loud continous noise i am about 450mm away, and if i am worried i just get out and look.Super cheap units, both the 4sensor,drill in the bumper type and the 2 sensor stick on type are just $37,but the sensors are black.i guess if it saves one dent it is money well spent HA,HA as i have found out the hard way
