Rust Prevention

Hi Guys,

Thought I'd let you know of the secret garbage bin that we have in our exy emoticon

While I was doing the mirrors mod today I had to take off the under-fender plastic guard off and you will be amazed at what I have found in there emoticon

Check this out for yourself

This is the perfect recipe for rust this stuff gets in there from the top and just sits there with no where to go.

Imagine what this would look like in 2-3 years time if you don't clean it.

My advice to you guys, check these hiding places regularly and it doesn't take a lot of effort to have this guard removed and this garbage corner cleaned. 3 screw-clips and that's it.

Re: Rust Prevention

Thanks, Jalal. I have been cleaning out the one in front of the back wheel which is obvious without removing anything, but I thought the inside of the renders was safe. Does this stuff enter through the gap between the windscreen and the bonnet? David M

Yes. am thinking of putting some sort of mesh/fly screen there to prevent the rubbish from going in.

The gutter cleaners can make a business out of this as well LOL emoticon

Re: Rust Prevention

Anybody know if the Electronic rust protection actually works?

We got it on the Elantra, but too early to tell if it works or not.

Looking at getting it for the exy in the near future. One less thing to worry about.

Cheers

Decided to bite the bullet and check out this garbage collection - also in the first real fog in Melb for some time found that one fog light globe was blown. Prepare for grazed knuckles etc. etc.
Couldn't work out the clips at the top of the wheel arch, but could get enough access without taking the thingy right off.
Yep, the same collection of leaves and junk; on the left hand side it was sandy and muddy so I think it gets in around the wheel rather than from on top between the bonnet and the windscreen.
Scrape it all out with my finger thinking maybe should spray some fish oil in here.
Rediscover that the fender is plastic!plastic!

(yeah, I know there's some metal down there too)

Re: Rust Prevention

Dave,

The fender is plastic and this is correct, however the garbage bin where this stuff is being collected is not, it's metal and forms an extension to the body of the car, hence the danger of rusting if not cleaned regularly.

The stuff of most concern would be collected sand and with the salty recipe it would definitely eat through that metal with time.

And after being thinckering with some things I didnt think that this could have happened...

Image

Those my friends are, 3 year old plants crap... emoticon Like someone said a potential rust spot.

Image

=D After some cleaning, I really got a lot of junk out of that space, would recommend everyone to do clean it.

Image

After some "Eagle one leather cleaner & conditioner" Very good, but it has some kind of oily feel on it so I dont recommend it to the lazy ones because removing it is a PITA.

Image

After 3M "show car wax". Very easy to apply & remove, very good results, I recommend this one to everyone.

Re: Rust Prevention

Hey guys,

i did mine today - it took me forever to try and figure out how to get those plastic clips off. Had about the same amount as you jalal, more leaves than anything else.
