Re: Better Fuel Consumption Device...

You've a valid point there, Jalal. However there are several methods to increase the XTY's mileage between tanks - and they all begin with improving the efficiency of your aerodynamics, engine, drivetrain and wheels/ tyres as a whole.

Assuming one has managed to boost performance with one aftermarket device or other, additives, lubes and such - the key to obtaining better mileage consequently is to change the gearing, or tyre diameter to take advantage of the increased power.

(Of course the issues of insurance, and speedometer correction will need to be addressed.)

One of the bigger problems we are facing is the fact that gasoline these days is a composite fuel, and packs (I believe) a fraction of the BTUs it used to have. The addition of ethanol in most countries as a replacement for MTBE, is not helping our cause either.

But the largest obstacle is - arguably - the XTY's ECU itself. It simply wants to see 14.7:1 air to fuel, and until someone can find a way to remap the VVT, MAF, spark advance and O2 etc, we are never going to see a permanent improvement in power along with the same base fuel consumption.

God that was long winded. Apologies:-)

That is correct, but for our boxy-type exy, aerodynamics wont bring much improvement to fuel consumption, wheels and tyres would and so is a lighter foot on the gas as Dave correctly suggested.

Such devices can be calibrated to work and give best results with the type of tyres you have.

As you know Eddie, this is no longer an obstacle and it has been done with the piggy back ECU I had fitted where all of the maps and settings you mentioned and more have been adjusted successfully and are giving me permanent power improvement with NO change to fuel consumption. Please refer to the "Piggy Back ECU" thread for details.

Re: Better Fuel Consumption Device...

Has anyone ever contacted Silverwater Automotive Services (SAS) regarding the X-Trail ECU? I have a family friend who builds drag cars for a living and he said that most cars are programmed rich, and a lot of power and fuel savings could be made if the ECU was adjusted. He reckoned the SAS mob should be able to do it but I haven't gone as far as ringing them yet.

Re: Better Fuel Consumption Device...

Hi Nath,

You're correct in saying that the factory fuel:air ratio maps are set for too rich by the manufacturers to be on the safe side and avoid any possible warranty claims as a result of pinging. However Nissan is keeping the map adjustment of their ECUs a VERY tight secret and no one so far has managed to crack the software to be able to change the maps on the ECU directly. The only way it can be done at the moment is by using a piggy back and fooling the ECU.

I doubt SAS would have a solution for this, if they did, they'll be the first ones in the world to be able to do this with our type of ECU.

Re: Better Fuel Consumption Devices and Fuel Additives.

By the mnual mine has a 65L tank, and gets around the 650 mark on highway, locked in 2WD mode.

If you have done any mods, might I suggest you reset your ECU.

I think some intelligent individual started a topic on ECU resetting somewhere here, but this isnt the first time I have seen the trick done.

Various other EFI vehicles occasionally get a bit messed up with dodgy sensor reading and spikes etc. alot of them will try to compensate for what it thinks is a problem, and all too often never run a second check to see if the problem has been resolved. This is especially common with O2 sensors in Commodore VR/VS vehicles.

The connector on the sensor comes loose, the ECU has a fit, you wiggle the connector back on and it chews fuel until you reset the ecu and let it re-adjust.

Re: Better Fuel Consumption Devices and Fuel Additives.

Dave,

Our ECUs (in the xtrail that is) are a learning type, so even if what you say is correct and someone wiggles the connector and doesn't re-set the ECU, it will pick-up and self adjust to the factory settings within 2-3 days of driving.
