Modifying Tail lights

I don’t know if the Aussie version has the top part of the rear light column with a light in it, I notice that Jalalski has them lit on his model, but on the UK version the top part is blanked off and I want to fit a light in it. I think it looks odd without and it would be a useful second light.
One of the LED stop and tail lights would fit the bill with their long life. On the UK model the back is sealed as one moulding and I want to cut into it and put the bulb in with silicon or hot melt glue. Has anyone done this or taken the red plastic off the bulb housing reflectors.
What is stopping me at the moment is dropping plastic shavings as I drill into the housing and not being able to get them out. It would be nice if I could put the bulb in from the front of the reflector but this would entail dismantling the unit and I am sure that it must be glued to stop it being pulled apart. Any advise will be welcome.
Phil

Re: Modifying Tail lights

Hi Phil,

Please use the search button on the right hand side to check for existing threads that may have discussed this subject already.

I think I'm the 2nd xtrail in Australia that has the modified taillight with the two extra parker/brakes lights at the top (I haven't seen anyone else with them yet, except one that encouraged me to do the same)

Anyway, details of how it has been done on mine can be found in THIS thread.

If this answers your question, please post any further questions you may have in that existing thread and I'll help you out with any further information.

Please let me know, so I can delete this duplicated post.

Jalal
Thanks for the information, but I still need to cut into the plastic and that would be best if the coloured lense came off first. Getting the hole in is my main problem.
I did notice that several had experemented with the headlights and changed the bulbs for Philips Blue vision. I have tried Philips Blue vision, Vision Plus and Osram Silver Star, GE 60%(rubbish)and one I would recommend is Philips GT150 if you can get it down there. Its ace, makes the others look second place although the are all much better than the standard bulb. All these are EEC and USA legal so I assume they would be ok with your regulations too.

Re: Modifying Tail lights

Phil,

The easiest and safest way would be to cut the whole from the back of the taillight itself without touching the coloured lens that I think is un-detachable.

The plastic shavings you're concerned about would come out when you make a hole big enough to hold a bulb holder or an LED with its base.

I haven't come across the GT150's here, but I'll check, am pretty happy with my BlueVision's at the moment.

Looks like I will have to go ahead and bite the bullet, I suppose that with a 25mm hole I will be able to get a vacumme in and clean up, i'll go ahead and order the bulbs and silicon, this could get messy.

hehehe. I paid an auto electrician to do the cutting, because I didn't have the nerve to cut my brand new exy LOL emoticon

When I've seen how he's done it, I realised that it wasn't that bad.

Good luck mate and let us know how ya go.

hehehe, we all have folders like these, but we don't make them viewable to public. Censorship kicks in and the content may be hurtful to other xtrailers LOL emoticon
