Re: Fuel consumption

I have thought a couple of times about going back to standard unleaded for a trial, but then I remember all the stuff Noel wrote about better for the engine etc; and it did make a difference to the feel. Since I filled it this morning (the price didn't seem to have jumped for the weekend yet)will have to wait until next time. Have now travelled 10,000 since we bought the exxy, and loving it. David.

Re: Fuel consumption

How much difference in fuel consumption does the rear spoiler make do you reckon - after all, if the spoiler is doing anything (apart from the cosmetic aspect)it creates down force at the expense of drag?
I noticed quite a bit of difference in fuel consumption when I removed the roof bars that came fitted, even though they're a reasonably aerodynamic shape.

Re: Fuel consumption

Guys,

I've been monitoring my fuel consumption since I fitted the larger 16" rims to my exy (ST) instead of the 15" which I had and after 2 re-fills so far, it seems that my fuel consumption has slightly increased as a result.

I used to get 9-9.9lt/100kms and now I'm getting 10.75-11.27lt/100kms in exactly the same driving conditions (i.e. driving to work and back with some highway driving)

Could the increase in rim size have an affect on fuel consumption?

Both times I travelled 486.7kms (put in 54.87Lts) and then 508.8kms (put in 54.73Lts)

Hi Jalal,

I'd say it's more likely that the wheel diameter has changed and it's your odometer reading that is different, not your fuel consumption? Hmm just thinkin' out loud... emoticon

Re: Fuel consumption

Or perhaps your new tyres have a higher rolling resistance than the old ones...?

Re: Fuel consumption

I reckon you're correct Brenton emoticon

I have just checked the tyre size calculator again and this time I compared between the stock 15" tyres (215/70/15) and the new ones which I now have (235/60/16) and it's saying that there is a Diameter Difference: 0.93%

Which means that while I was travelling at 100kms/hour on my old 15" tyres, am doing 99kms/hour with the new ones, so that would also explain that my speedo is probably out by that little much emoticon

I have to check the highway marker and see if the above matches.

And I thought I was loosing fuel somewhere LOL emoticon

Re: Fuel consumption

Jala you're correct in saying that it's the new tyres that has caused your variation in fuel figures. Larger diameter tyres will give you less revolutions(of the tyre) per kilometer, therefor theoretically saying you haven't travelled as far. If you remember we discussed similar in the tyres topic a while ago. Dont take your tyre calculator as gospel, as the rolling diameter of tyres the same size vary from brand to brand. Toyo has a size guide on their website, so do BFG. Look on the bright side, when you come to sell your car it wont have as many K's on it therefor you should get a better price for it!!!!!

Re: Fuel consumption

Thanks for good news xtrailing emoticon

Yes , I remember our discussion in the tyre thread, but I was always comparing tyres of the same rim size (i.e. 15" to the 15") and didn't bother comparing 15" to 16" so that's why I suspected that the new tyres and rims caused this.

I like the idea of having lower Km's emoticon

Actually the tyre size calculator is pretty accurate when I compare it to the figures on the manufacturers web site.

Re: Fuel consumption

Hi xtrailing,

Am glad you reminded me to post a follow-up on this, as I meant to do that last week emoticon

OK, everything is back to normal now after 2 re-fills and am back to 9.2lt/100km's average for city driving using Mobil standard unleaded.

I can only assume that my ECU was adjusting itself when I fitted the new size rims and wider tyres and now it's used to the change.

I will keep monitoring the fuel, but I think everything is OK now.
