Re: Fuel consumption

I’ve just done a test on my fuel economy after the recall.

- 29500Kms on the clock
- Premium Unleaded
- NGK Iridium IX Spark Plugs
- K&N Air Filter
- Combo of 2WD and AUTO lock
- Combo of City and Highway driving
- Combo of Light to Heavy acceleration

495kms for 50.1Litres, which equates to an average consumption of 10.1LT/100Kms

Cheers

Re: Fuel consumption

My worst consumption since I switched to premium is still only 11.44 lites per 100 - that was city driving then towing the trailer with a ride-on-mower and barbecue making a relatively high load. And mine is automatic. Over the last 4000 kms my overall average is 10.39l/100kms.
Fuel consumption is related to weight (my Xtrail is more economical than my commodore was because it's a lighter vehicle, not because it has a smaller engine), but even so 17 litres per 100 sounds a lot to me. IMHO. David.

posticon Premium Fuel*secrets un-covered*

Hi Guys,

Just copied this from another forum and thought you may find the information contained in it of interest to you. It has certainly got me thinking twice about premium unleaded.

quote:

Here are a couple of links that dicuss octane rating and engine peformance, and quotes from them...

http://www.superchargersonline.com/content.asp?id=105

High octane fuel does not burn cleaner, it does not clean your engine, it does not increase horsepower or torque (unless you are experiencing knock), it does not smell better, it does not increase fuel economy (unless you are experiencing knock) and is not better for the environment. If you buy higher octane fuels for any of the above reasons, STOP!

http://www.shell.ca/code/motoring/e...nes/octane.html

The value that relates most closely to actual driving conditions is the average of these two values: Road Octane Number = (RON + MON)/2. This Road Octane value is the one referred to in Shell stations: Shell Bronze gasoline has an octane rating of 87, Shell Silver is 89 and Shell Optimax Gold is 91.

Occasionally, less scrupulous Canadian gasoline outlets will use the confusion of these different octane measurements to exaggerate their octane rating claims, by advertising their fuel's Research Octane Number - which will be higher than the Road Octane Number. It is also a common practice in many European countries to advertise the Research Octane Number on their pumps, so you may see unexpectedly high octane values when travelling abroad. In Canada, motorists should always be sure that the octane number a vendor advertises is its Road Octane value, not its RON.

Engines in vehicles built for sale in North America are designed to a specified octane requirement to make sure they don't knock or ping (engine knocking reduces the amount of power it can deliver to turn the wheels). Once that octane level has been met, in normal instances your car will not experience more power or better mileage if you use a higher octane fuel.

Re: Fuel consumption

My brother is an experienced petro chemical engineer. He says the problem since they got rid of lead is that the stuff they use to boost the octane ratings is actually much worse (carcinogenics etc) for the environment than lead was. They are working to find other ways to boost the octane rating though. Our conversation was interrupted at that point, but I think that applies to regular unleaded as well. Maybe to confirm my results on better economy from premium I ought repeat the experiment and go back to regular unleaded for about 4000 kms to check whether economy is worse; 2000 kms on each is not huge as a sample. However, since I changed over to premium at about the same time as the recall, and the premium gave a better feel in terms of power, and the premium has given better fuel economy from my log book records, I'm convinced. (The recall was about overheating because of too lean a mixture on highway cruising if I understood that thread correctly; therefore I assume the fix was a richer mixture which should have given worse economy all other things being equal).

Re: Fuel consumption

I just filled up and got 51L in (the fuel light on the dash only just came on) and had only travelled 436klm...

Maybe having the sub box in again since the last fill-up has considerably affected fuel economy? It's not all that heavy, really...

Jalal, I think it's time I put in a new air filter emoticon

51 divided by 4.36 equals 11.7 l/100 kms. A little high but did this include a lot of city/offroad? Or was that Heavy Metal you had on? emoticon David.

Re: Fuel consumption

Hi guys,

I dropped my X-Trail off for a service less than an hour ago, and I've just received a call asking if I wanted to have the injectors cleaned for just under $100, which they recommend every 20,000k's...

I mentioned that I didn't notice it on the maintenance schedule.

Could this mean that they have noticed something that I didn't - possibly through CONSULT telling them that fuel consumption is higher than your average X-Trail (which I already know, and have reduced down to 2 causes - filthy air filter (FULL of dust) and the extra weight (sub box) in the boot).

I mentioned that in the whole 80,000k's (then plus some) that I owned my pulsar, I never once had the injectors cleaned. Perhaps it was because I always used premium in my pulsar which might've reduced the need to have the injectors cleaned. A quick calculation based on premium being 10c/L dearer than regular unleaded, 80,000k's would be around $8000 (at 10L for 100km) while regular would be around $7200 (assuming efficiency is the same, which it isn't) but the values would be closer if the premium was less than 10c/L dearer. So buying premium works out (at most) double what the injector clean would cost in the long term...

I would still rather do experiment myself and replace the air filter first, and see if fuel efficiency improves, then start running on premium (I did notice an improvement on the couple of tank-fulls I tried months ago), and as a last resort (and personal preference - never likely to happen), will be to get the injectors cleaned.

All city driving, and I would've rarely gone over 70km/hr.

No heavy metal - I meant the sub box is heavy - well approx 30kg? But the acceleration is noticeably more sluggish when it's in the boot.

Re: Fuel consumption

My last lot of city driving I got 11.1 l per hundred, but that does include a bit of freeway; mine is automatic. I reckon 11.7 is probably about right for ordinary city driving; I wrote in another thread (sorry can't remember which - was it the one about the recall) about changing to premium - on my figures, anything less than 8c per litre dearer for premium is actually cheaper because the economy did improve apart from any maintenance considerations. It seems it may take a couple of tanks for the ECU to adjust to premium, so the odd tank now and then may not give the same benefit. I wouldn't have thought just thirty kgs in the back would have made much difference. emoticon David.

Re: Fuel consumption

Dave,

My fuel consumption (city driving with a bit of a highway) hovers around 9L-10L/100km using standard unleaded.

After reading the article (on the previous page of this thread) I decided it wasn't worth the extra money I would spend on it.
