Re: Low fuel warning light

I did run out about three weeks ago - fortunately no-one else in the car and even more fortunately, I was about 500 m from home (on my way to get petrol). Was able to walk home and get the lawn mower tin; tipped about three litres in and the engine started straight away. Wasn't even late where I was going. No ill effects that I've noticed so far.

Re: Low fuel warning light

I used to run my fuel tank past the reserve level quite often, until I took out the fuel pump to have a look.

The X-trail's fuel pump does not sit in a deeply recessed chamber of the tank and therefore is not bathed in gasoline when the tank runs low on fuel. This can result in overheating if the tank is almost fully drained between refilling.

On many German cars, the pump sits in a special reservoir or cavity that is filled with fuel even when the tank is almost completely drained. This keeps the pump cool, and helps with reliability and durability issues.

Fortunately, modern gasoline compositions contain a considerable amount of oil, which helps keep the pump lubricated even when it runs dry.

But some wear is bound to occur if this goes on and on, as the pump needs to prime itself each time it is drained of fuel.

Since then, I try to make a point of refilling once I've reached 1/4 tank. It's a hassle, but the peace of mind is worth it.

Re: Low fuel warning light

common protocoll for myself in every car I have driven, is to treat the 1/4 tank as your reserve mark.

If you can't get to your destination above that mark, then you have not planned correctly.

Then again, much of my driving experience is in rural areas, where a fallen tree can add 50k's to your trip.

Before you say it, some of these trees would take 50k's worth of chainsaw fuel to cut up and shift.

Does any know how many kilometers one can drive (highway cycle) once the low fuel warning indicator light illuminates ???.
On a recent trip I got just over 600kms on a tank of regular unleaded fuel.
Would like feedback from anyone who has or is using Optimax or any other premium fuel, was there a noticeable change in performance or fuel economy????

Hi Nico1

I usually get 600- 620km on a tank on regular (no aircon). Mix of freeway and city driving.

I recently filled up the tank with caltex premium and i have been using the aircon a lot... anyway, the performance has been good (however not out of the ordinary) but the fuel economy has been really bad - eg i am on the last line on the guage and i have only done 420 kms..... so i think the fuel economy will not be as good!!! i had aircon on but come on, it can't use that much (eg over 150kms worth). I also had the car serviced during this time, so if they had to rev it out it might explain some of the economy.... not sure though.

Cheers
Matt

My gauges start to flash when there are approx 70 -90l kms left in the tank. ( 2 dots illuminated)
I have driven till there was 45kms left and filled up, I calculated that there was 5 litres of fuel in the tank, so gauge is spot on.

Having filled the T31 for the first time last night when the low fuel light came on the trip computer told me I had 54km to empty at present consumption rate however 20km down the road (and further along the same motorway) I had 58km to go......
