Level sensor.
Park your Exy on a steepish hill one day with 1/4 tank and see what the fuel guage does. Should be different depending on forward or rearward facing also.

Re: Low fuel warning light

So how does the load on the rear affect the level? If it was a submersible level sensor, then it works on hydrostatic pressure. If it is just a switch then it is purely based on level and the load wouldn't affect it? Am I on the wrong track?

Re: Low fuel warning light

The load in the back, or on the towbar changes the ride height of the Exy and so changes the level of the tank.
Depending on the placement of the sensor, the level of the fuel for the same volume will be at a different height up the sensor.

Best way to demonstrate is to half fill a bottle with water and lay it on a table (with the lid on).
When you lift the top of the bottle slightly, the water level at the top is now seen as less and at the bottom as more.

Re: Low fuel warning light

The float is usually located in the centre of the tank, though, to minimize variations.
I've been doing a bit of towing the tandem trailer lately and therefore the trip meter method is not quite as predictable; to know whether I have 100kms left when the light comes on, or 140, is the difference between filling at country or city prices because we consistently return down the Calder with a long stretch between the last country service station and the first city one. I just would like to be sure its now consistently coming on at 48, but I guess that's the interesting bit - not knowing until afterwards.

Re: Low fuel warning light

From the service manual Dave, it looks like the Exy actually has 2 fuel level sensors, one on each side of the tank as it straddles the tailshaft, but still both mounted towards the front.

Re: Low fuel warning light

Theoretically speaking (because I dont *really* want to test this myself <g>)what would happen if you run your tank dry? Example: light comes on, I tell the Minister for War, Finance and Entertainment that the next petrol station is 80 kms away
"we'll make it, don't worry ... "
(70kms on ...)Splutter, cough ..
"Hello? RACQ? Erm, empty petrol tank"
Will there be damage to the injectors? Plugs? Engine?

Re: Low fuel warning light

There shouldn't be any immediate damage, but don't make a habit of it, as all the dirt deposits at the bottom of the tank will eventually find their way to the injectors and the fuel pump, which is not good.

Re: Low fuel warning light

Don't forget also Wayne that depending on if you are highway cruising, towing or 4wd'ing you will get varying kms from what is left in the tank when the low fuel indicator illuminates.

And if your Minister for WFE is anything like mine, they would love the "I told you so" phrase emoticon
