Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

re: dyno

I was going to put our X-Trail on the dyno @ one of the days organised by the pulsar groupm, only ours still had very few kilometres on it (<5000), and Clare wouldn't let me do it...

I'm keeping my eyes open for another dyno day so I can take it along.

Initially I was worried about it going into 4WD mode (as it says in the owners manual that it may or may not revert to 4WD even if it's in 2WD mode). This would be catastrophic if it happened on a dyno machine. From "experiments" with doing the occasional "burnout" from traffic lights, and other situations (enthusiastic acceleration up-hill on unsealed roads) I have come to the conclusion that it wont change to 4WD if it's in 2WD mode emoticon

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

nice!

I could just imagine the exy going into 4wd mode at a 6000+ revs in 3rd gear! wouldn't they get a fright! as well as make a mess as u say

The mechanic has a 4wd dyno but i think that it would require the car in 4wd mode which isn't practical at that speed. Will see what they think at some stage

Series II guys. You're off the hook emoticon

That sounds like a company forced into a statement if I ever heard it, quite possibly from our black and chrome crusader!

 =D

Well done Jalal.

Geoff,

Am sure there were other crusaders (maybe without any chrome emoticon ) who joined in the quest for open information from Nissan.

I think it has worked and nissan got the message.

As a person who said - dont panic yet - let them get through it.
I will say well done if the "crusadors" have made Nissan aware that they must put more effort into informing their customers

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

Hey guys,

I just dropped my car off at National Capital Motors (Nissan) and they are going to "have a look" at my car relating to this recall. Hopefully it won't be parked in exactly the same position when i pick it up, eh?

I printed off the recall info but they said that i need an official letter from Nissan. I've sent away the change of ownership form, but i'm thinking it may be a good idea to have Nissan Headquaters' number incase i dont hear anything from them. Does anyone (Jalal, lol) know the number?

Cheers, Matt

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

Hi Matt,

Good luck to you mate, although I don't think dealers yet know how to diagnose this fault or what to do if found, as they're still waiting for their instructions from head office on this, which they're supposed to get by end of Feb.

Anyway here are the numbers for nissan australia, I have memorised them by heart now emoticon

Ok, she took the xtrail into Nissan to see the foreman this morning and they went for a drive. Apparently according to him all xtrails are experiencing the same problem as ours. Slightly sluggish starts and a slight exhaust rattle or change in tone that goes away gradually about 15min after start up resulting in a bit more power.

The engine is about 20000 ks old, there is a new cat about 5000k old and the throttle body was cleaned at the same time. The air filter is pretty dirty so we will get a K&N one cause I know the difference it made on my 180sx (2 door, 2 litre turbo jap import) and see if that at least helps the problem.

We are advised that nissan aus is aware that this problem is widespread and it may or may not be covered by warranty out of the warranty period. We are also advised to keep driving the car until it either goes away or something more serious develops.

We will write another letter to nissan indicating our dissapointment that the dealer acknowleges there is a problem but they cannot fix or even identify what it is.

anyone else heard of this sounds like now it is unrelated to the cat issue?

With the 180sx i had it put on the dyno and tuned after all the modifications i've had done. Apart from the tuning benefit whenever i think something is wrong with it the mechanic can throw it on the dyno and compare the figures to the original ones and then determine what the extent of the problem is.

Has anyone got a dyno sheet for a stock xtrail?

I guess they should be able to do something similar through the computer on the xtrail anyway?

You have some of the problems as I did. For the rattle of the exhaust, I had a defective mufler(grab your tailpipe(with the engine off) and move it quickly, is it sounds like a bag filled of rice its broken) and they replaced it out of warranty, its a common issue on 2002's. The symptons are: Vibration in the entire cabin at around 1500rpm, resonance when the engine is cold. Also, for the RPM problem there are 2 things that could be causing this: Defective TPS/THROTTLE assembly or they didnt reprogram the idle air volume learning of the ECU, refer to Basic operations on EM.PDF(of x-trails repair manual). Hope this helps.

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

hey guys,

i just wanted to let you all know that i've picked up the car - they checked the cat converter and O2 sensor and they said they looked good. Also reprogrammed the ECU with what i assume is updated software? Would i be right in saying that?

When i started the car at the dealer it revved up normal, then i stopped in at maccas and i started it up and the revs kinda dropped, like it initially had trouble or something.... im assuming the ECU is re-learning or something. Anyway Jalal i know you had a rev problem after a service, but now its ok, i think the same thng has/will happen with me.

By the way i had a print out of the recall website and nothing else, no official nissan letter or anything.

Matt

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

Hi Matt,

What do they mean when they say, "looks good"?

Have the actually itemised this job on your invoice?

Because if they didn't and you get a letter from nissan advising you to arrange an appt. with your dealer to have these 2 things checked-out or changed, then they've done nothing!

You need to have a record of the job they have performed under the recall, otherwise you gonna have problems selling your exy.

The other thing to remember that yours could be one of the lucky series I that is not affected by the recall as well.

RE: ECU Software upgrade check your invoice again, they should attach a print-out from the ECU itself (something like a visa card docket) which will have the software version (both old & new)

My ECU s/w was updated when they cleaned the throttle body, just after the 20K service and the software version, which they loaded on mine, was (Calibration ID 19H665) the old calibration ID was 19H407.

And yes, the rev thing will stabilise after a while.
