Re: Replacement Tyres

G'day! Have just bought my X trail ST Auto and am trading in my 15 inch rims and tyres.

I have decided on Coopers STE 235/60/16 and am due to put them on tomorrow BUT.. On looking at the internet the above tyres are only 100"T" rated tyres. I was told by the tyre seller that these Coopers are superior to the Toyos on my car.

At first glance it they seem superior to the Toyo tyres (88H) it came with. However on the letter scale the "T" is only rated to 190km where as the "H" on the TOYO is rated to 210km! Therefore is less than the "H" speed rating placarded on my x trail's tyre/wheel sticker emoticon

I am pretty sure it makes them illegal to put on? Any ideas?

I am wanting a nice quiet tyre for mostly highway driving with a bit of dirt driving around the far north Queensland. Any recommendations?

Re: Replacement Tyres

Hi Kernhell and welcome to the forum.

The tyres you have chosen with a speed and load rating of 100T may NOT be suitable for the x-trail, depending on your State regulations.

This is an extract of the golden rules taken from a tyre manufacturer web site and you will find the same statement in the ADR in your state:

quote:

NOTE: When fitting new replacement tyres and/or wheels, ensure any alternative to the original tyre and wheel fitment complies with relevant state legislation, and that tyre load and speed ratings equal or exceed the minimum allowed for that vehicle in your state.

Here are the speed and load rating conversions for your reference.

Speed Ratings:

Please check the Road Traffic Authority guide-lines in your State for speed rating recommendations.

Thanks Jalalski,

What would you suggestions for a 90on/10off-road tyre in 16 inch on the market today? emoticon

I have read the previous ten pages of posts, but have ended up a little confused!?

Cheers

PS: Great site! emoticon

Re: Replacement Tyres

Thank you Kernhell emoticon

In the size you're after (235/60/16) your choices are basically limited to two tyres only and both of them are A/T tyres, which means 50 on/50 off-road

One of them is the one I got Bridgestone D694 in the exact same size you're after.

The other one is Pirelli Scorpion (I think)

I didn't come across a tyre in that size that in H/T

You may want to ask the tyre place for more recommendations, but I guess it depends on how much you wanna spend on the tyres.

Re: Replacement Tyres

My OPAT's are 215/75/15 100S so I don't meet the "H" rating either, however I understand that you only have to have a minimum of an "N" rating (to 140 kmh) on your tyres. I don't plan on doing over 180 kmh anyway, but I appreciate there could be a risk with insurance.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Hi Kernhell,
If you want a good 10/90 HT tyre in the 16" size, maybe you could look at the Bridgestone tyre that comes standard on the TI (Not sure of the model number).

I have found them to be very good so far.

Bridgestone D689 is the standard tyre for the Ti, however they're not available in 235/60/16.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Thanx for the responses...

I ended up buying some Toyo Transpath S/U 235/60/16 for the measley sum of $260 each! And they are going on tomorrow with my new 16 inch rims! emoticon They are a bit more aggresive than I wanted but will see how they go.

Tried to get pirelli scorpions but there are none available for 10 weeks and the tyre shop only had three Bridgestone 694s.

Hope they are OK? emoticon

Good stuff Kernhell.

Let us know how you go with these tyres and your impressions about them.

Keep an eye on your fuel consumption as well for the first couple of weeks and see if it changes compared to the 15" rims you had before.

I noticed a slight increase in my fuel consumption until the ECU adjusted itself to the new size rims.

posticon Re: Replacement Tyres

Hi all

Thought I would contribute to the discussion and maybe even broaden the brands under consideration. I have noticed a lot on the Bridgestones, Coopers, Toyos and even Dunlops.

Well 12 months or so ago I replaced the 15 inch steel wheels and Toyos (never really happy with them) with 16 inch alloys and Goodyear Wrangler HP All Weather (235/60R16). Most of my driving is on road (90-95%) and 10-5% dirt road & fire trail type driving. I did look at the Dunlop RV501 to fit the steel rims however I was not entirely happy with the look...

I have found the Goodyear tyres much more capable on road than the Toyos and wear to date has been quite good. No - I have not really monitored fuel consumption to see if there was a change moving from the 15 to 16 inch tyres. I run the tyres at about 36 psi so the ride on road is a bit bouncier due to less sidewall flex to absorb road "irregularities".

Ultimately choice of tyres is a bit hit and miss as your overall satisfaction will be influenced by driving style, road surface quality and blend of on/off-road requirements.

Anyway as I said at the start I thought I'd through another brand into the equation to help/confuse those looking at replacement tyres.

Hope this little bit helps.
