I think you said earlier that road noise and fuel consumption was a negative for the A/T tyres though. Is that right ?
I like the look of them though.

That is correct Kev. I wouldn't choose A/T tyres for everyday city driving again. They're perfect off-road, but I didn't like their impact on fuel and the noise they produced on-road.

My comment was only based on the size fitting the 6.5inch rim with no problems.

I have not tried them on sand (water crossings, mud and rocks they were perfect) but I suspect they will trap sand in them due to the aggressive and deep tread pattern.

For what you wanna use the tyres for, I think a 70% on road and 30% off road type of tyre would be the most suitable in your case (the D694 is a 50/50 type of tyre)

Re: Replacement Tyres

I can get the Scorpion STR for $199 which is a 90/10 tyre.
The same place also has the Scorpion S/T for $199 which is a 70/30 tyre and not too aggressive for sand like a 50/50 A/T.
Both are 215/65/16

Stock availability might be the only problem since the STR is replacing the S/T which is a pitty since Pirelli have no other tyre between a 90/10 and a 50/50.

Re: Replacement Tyres

And being a softer tyre, chances are the sidewall will also be softer so with the 235/60/16 it might not handle well on the road due to flex.

I'm leaning towards the Scorpions but just deciding on STR or S/T if still available.

Seems like you'll be getting a few unexpected Christmas presents emoticon

Re: Replacement Tyres

I have just fitted a set of maxxis a/t tyres to my exy, after advice from Bob Janes, and do not like them at all, never again will i listen to any tyre service crap,i was prepared to spend more money but the tyre service insisted this was the way to go.They wander all over the road when pumped up tp 35psi,and i have let them down a little at the time till 30psi which has nearly cured the wander lust but they are now noisy at low speed. My ambition is to wear them out and get rid of them, not happy and the coopers were must better.cheers and merryxmas

You've already tried the first suggestion I was going to make...

With regards to the loudness at low speeds; I think this is an attribute of the A/T tread pattern, as my BFG's also are quite noisy at approx 40kph - it must be something to do with the tread pattern and resonance/air being forced through the tread pattern. Once you get over 45kph they suddenly get quieter, but this could be attributed to the increased wind noise of the roof racks or just general wind/road noise.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Just an update on the Grabber AT2 tyres. I have done nearly 600 miles on them now and we have just had very heavy rain . The tyres performed excelently, there was no aquaplaining and the road grip was solid. In over 30 years of driving I think these are the best tyres I have ever had. I can definately recomend them for this vehicle.
I keep them at 36psi and the ride and handling is very good.

Re: Replacement Tyres

I am getting used to the maxxis, and you are right the noise goes away at about 100k/s.They appear to be not to bad at 30psi,and now i have done 500k/s or so and do not appear that bad.I have to live with my decisions i suppose.Did you see the herald sun paper a few weeks ago about fellow who wrecked his discs and pads on a exy at 20,000k/s and had the hide to complain about the brakes and said his commodore lasted longer and the pads and discs were rubbish. They the paper should not publish rubbish like this and this fellow is a boy racer for sure, and a rabbit.cheers

Re: Replacement Tyres

Guys

Just continuing a discussion from the suspension lift thread that has drifted into tyre choice. Basically, I want to get as much lift out of a new set of rubber as possible whilst remaining legal and wanted someone to confirm my calculation. The two types stamped on my chasis (I assume these are "approved tyres" in the legal sense)are:
215/70 R15 (the ones I currently have)
215/65 R16 (slightly larger in diameter)

From my calcs, the largest I can go to is 235/70 R16. This will put the speedo out 7.2% but more importantly, the increase in diammeter would be 49.5mm larger than the largest size stamped on the chasis. (In Western Oz you can go to a max of 50mm increase on 4WD's).

I am also assuming that if the diammeter is 49.5mm larger then that would I equate to a 24.75mm lift?? Or have I got it all totally wrong?

Thanks in advance
Stu

Stu,
Not sure if I am reading this right, but are you putting 16" tyres on 15" rims.
