Jalal,
Was that $270 price from Jax already with the cost of the air filter removed, or is that cost still to be deducted from the $270?
Changing spark-plugs at 40,000???
Are they the platinum-tipped ones? If so, they are supposed to last 80,000-100,000k's! Well that's what it says in my pulsar SSS manual...
$270 is after the cost of the air filter was taken-out.
I checked my service manual and it says replace spark plugs (conventional type) at 40K. Not sure if mine are platinum-tipped or not. (how can I tell?)

The spark plugs should have a code on them or the word platium.Look at the tips and usually you can see the seperate platium on the plug, like a little weldered plug.I can not believe what you pay for a sevice in sydney. In the latrobe valley in victoria my last service 20,000kilos was $183.00 which i thought was too high, and this was using 0-40 mobile one oil and charging me $21 for a oil filter when i can buy a rico for $14.I will be going some where else and i have been told to go to pedders as they will do it for $100,and use nissan parts,so as not to give nissan a way out DUXBAC
Thanks for the info. duxbac, I'll check the sparks tomorrow.
We are getting ripped off big time in Sydney with service prices. Sometimes I think they're trying to make-up for all the discounts and extras we forced them to give us when we bought our cars.
I didn't know that Pedders did any car servicing apart from suspension work. Checked their web site and couldn't find any info. about servicing. Maybe I looked in the wrong place.
I remember there was an ad on tv a while ago inviting people to do warranty services without impacting the warranty and very good prices using genuine parts as well, just can't remeber the name of this place. Will look in the yellow pages.

Hi Jalal,
I was talking with the service manager in Darwin late last year about this recall, he told me the symptoms were no start and the vehicles usually were not affected until around 40K.
I hope this helps. As a former advisor I can inform you that your vehicle is definately covered by Nissan warranty so long as you have the services completed by a certified mechanical business and mechanic/apprentice. The only comeback the maker has is if the problem can be traced back to faulty workmanship or a breakdown of the parts used. I know that some of the cheaper oil filters did not have the same performance and safety features as the genuine article (relief valves). I believe your main grevience may be the labour content of your service? If I may make a suggestion...Always use genuine parts even if you have to supply them yourself and ensure the service mechanic is using an approved oil.
Hope this helps.
Spoon
Thanks for the info. Spoon,
At the time of the recall last year, Nissan informed me that my model was not affected by the recall, as it didn't fall within the range of recalled VIN's.
I don't think I have the same symptoms as described above, as my car does start, but sometimes it just doesn't start from the 1st ignition key turn. I have attributed this to dirty fuel, or the fuel injectors may require cleaning at the next service.
I've never had a situation whereby the engine stoped running during car operation. No warning light comes on either.
The other thing I noticed and this only happens when the car is left un-used for a number of days (say 2 days) is that when I start the car the engine picks-up then I get the feeling that it's gonna stop, then it picks-up the rev again as if the automatic chock has some sort of a delay in operating. (not sure if anyone else has experienced this)
As for using genuine parts, it depends on your interpretation of the word "genuine" if by genuine it is meant that parts are manufactured in Taiwan or China and then put in a box which is labelled "Made in Japan", then they're hardly genuine. With my previous car (Toyota) I have come across this many times, whereby I used to get parts direct from the dealership which was labelled "made in Japan" but the actual part inside the box is of a completely different origin.
I worked in the car spare parts business with my dad overseas and know the above is something that is quite normal. It wouldn't be economical for dealers to export all of the parts from Japan and then add their mark-up, which will shoot prices through the roof, so a compromise is being done somewhere.
This brings me to a conclusion that as long as the parts you're getting are from a reputable origin, then they should be fine.

OK Guys,
After carefull consideration and shopping around, I have decided to give the nissan dealers a flick and jump ship to JAX.
Back when I used to own a pulsar, I got a flyer from the local JAX in Bondi Junction for a very cheap service. So, tempted, I decided to take the car there instead of my usual mechanic.
The service was cheap but they found lots of other things that needed fixing. New muffler, etc, so ended up costing abour $500. Never went back.
True, but they can't pull this trick on 2002 model car with 40K on the clock, maybe they would attempt this trick at around a 100K, then I'll be looking somewhere else.

Re: Warranty Repairs
Spoon, where did you get the VIN number range from? Are you 100% sure that this is the most up to date rnage of the affected X-Trails?
I just got home and thought I'll double-check my VIN and guess what? It falls within the affected range!
I was just on the phone with the service mgr of nissan-sutherland and I told him about the information I got from you and he said that it's strange, because my car records clearly show the my model is not affected, although he acknowledged that it does fall into the range you provided. He took my VIN and is going to chase-up with nissan head-office, just to confirm that the VIN range I gave him is correct and check if my exy is affected by this.
He did mention one other known problem that xtrail owners are experiencing and which is also covered by warranty and guess what again? It is the same problem I was telling you guys about (the engine wont start in the morning, or starts with a very low rev, then picks-up) he said it has something to do with the body throttle and the air intake tube that is getting dirty and therefore causing the idle to go bananas.
He said he'll get back to me tomorrow with a confirmation in regards to the recall and this new problem as well.
Thanks very much for alerting me to this.
Guys, check your VIN's
