Re: Warranty Repairs

Obviously they vary from service to service. My question is what do they actually do. I look at the list of things they claim and wonder. I've always been wary of anyone in the car game. Because it's so cut throat, so many of them cut corners.

I know of one person who has caught mechanics out by putting permanent marker on parts they claim to need replacing. Then when they get the car back found some of the original pieces still there.

Re: Warranty Repairs

I've had my share of bad service with these guys as well and told them off real hard, as they left one of the wheel nuts loose and when I drove to work the next day driving at 110km/hour (obviously above speed limit) on a highway, this sudden shake of the rear end of my car kicks in, I switch on my hazards, people give me way to pull over and sure enough I started to check the wheel nuts one by one and one of them was about to fall off.

Lucky no damage was done, except to nissan's pride when I went back after work and told them off, so other people in the dealership waiting to pick-up their cars could hear me as well.

My other story was with To$o#a who used to replace my brake pads with 2nd hand ones and claim they've changed them.

How about that for top class dealer service?

posticon Re: Warranty Repairs

Hi Jal,

On my recent travels I played the tourist paying full retail where ever I went. This is what I have paid to date. (Nissan Dealers)

1000k Free

10000k $150.55 Maitland Nissan N.S.W.
$71 labour
$72.50 Parts/Oils/injector cleaner/oil conditioner/engine flush etc
$6.86 EPA Levy and consumables

20000k $193.50 Peter Kittle Nissan Tennant Creek
$110.40 Labour
$22.48 Parts
$26.33 POL - petrol oils & lubricants
$16.70 Misc?
$17.59 GST
this included a bit of extra time to adjust headlights/rotate tyres.

Now I put myself at risk here, I am a FORMER Service Advisor (finished 9 years ago), with experience in Toyota, Ford, Daewoo, Mercedes, Jaguar (JRA), (Nissan very briefly).
A few things that may help you obtain a better deal include approaching your local service managers and informing them you are part of a Nissan Owners group promoting the Nissan product. This may motivate the service/parts management to provide you a trade discount. May even be worth going straight to the Dealer Principal or PR person??

Question the invoice totals, you will find that the misc or shop supplies usually is an average for all greases/stickers/general supplies that mechanics use to service all vehicles. If you think your service did not require any grease shop supplies etc then it may be worth arguing the point. Believe me the cost is a legitmate one but when the customer argues my collegues and I would often remove the misc cost and sometimes reduce the labour/parts to trade depending on customer attitude also.

The mechanic that left the wheel nuts loose should have been sacked on the spot and you mav a case for a law suit! May get a new X-Trail??hehehehe

Cheers

Re: Warranty Repairs

Thanks Spoon,

I'll try and be more thorough next time when I take it for service and argue some points mentioned on the invioce as you suggested.

They usually tell me up-front how much it's gonna cost, so maybe I should bargain with them from the start before taking my car in.

In regards to getting a new nissan..yeah good one emoticon they were lucky I didn't cause a major accident on the highway, as they would have ended-up supplying quite a number of new cars to people that were driving close by. That's of course if I lived to tell the story emoticon

The reason I went to check the wheels nuts as soon as it happened, is because I had a mate of mine overseas who had exactly the same problem (he lived to tell the story as well) emoticon

Not sure if the guy that stuffed the matter up at nissan was sacked or not, but the service adviser whom I spoke to was yellow in colour after the incident.

Re: Warranty Repairs

I had a look at the whiteboard on the wall behind the Service counter @ Rockdale Nissan as they list all their models and prices for the first 5 or so services (or maybe they had distinguished between minor and major services). I can't remember the price off the top of my head, and I probably wrote it down on a bit of paper somewhere, but that could be lying around anywhere...

I went to them for most of my Pulsar services, and there was an incident one time when I was there watching them trying to get my pulsar onto the ramps/hoist - they scraped the underside of the pulsar and bent one of the brackets underneath, and didn't bother repairing it saying that it's a bracket that wouldn't ever need to be removed anyway (now I know why they have the "customers not to enter workshop" signs - it's not to prevent you from suing them in the case of an accident happening to you, it's so you don't see what goes on back there! emoticon ). But I'm not particularly pointing the finger at them - I imagine *all* workshops have had some sort of blunder at one stage or another. If it's any consolation, I've seen mates' pulsars get brand new CV joints under warranty due to destroying the original ones because they lowered the car 3.5 inches (which they wouldn't have known about cos he put the original springs back in) He tried a second time, but they told him he'd have to pay this time emoticon

I tend to do as much myself as possible, to save costs - their labour alone for an oil change was more than it would cost me to buy the oil, filter, drain pan, and do it myself! But mostly the reason is so I know it's actually done, and done properly. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, and have a go at pulling things apart and hopefully getting them back together correctly (I changed the head of my pular in my garage, with the help of a couple of mates). If you've done it yourself, then you *know* you've done it right (no loose nuts, etc).

I went to "My Car" (are they still around?) after the Nissan incident, and trying to get them to due a cut-down service was a nightmare... I'd already changed the oil, and it was a standard 40,000 service, yet they tried to add all these other things to the list (until I showed them what the manual stated had to be done)...

My dad would be someone to mark the oil filter to see if they'd actually changed it or just cleaned the outside of it with a rag emoticon

I've gone abit overboard with this reply... Sorry emoticon

When I pop into Nissan Rockdale next, I'll have a look at the whiteboard (or a simple phone call would let you know). I'll be going in for my 10,000 in a couple of months. Just clocked up 6,000 in 4 months...

Re: Warranty Repairs

I can do some basic DIY stuff like changing the oil and filter, air filter..etc, but I wouldn't risk it and do the tyre rotatation and wheel alignment myself.

The point is some repairs are best done by professionals "sort of speak" no matter how good and knowledgable a person is and of course with that comes the risk of not knowing what goes on behind closed doors at the dealers.

The other advantage for doing it the professional way, is that you can always go back if you're not satisfied and think there is still something wrong.

I'd better start marking my car from inside and out emoticon

Re: Warranty Repairs

OK Guys,

After carefull consideration and shopping around, I have decided to give the nissan dealers a flick and jump ship to JAX.

My phone calls to 3 nissan dealers (including Rockdale, which was the cheapest at $340) asking for a price for 40K service revealed that the average price at nissan is around $370

One phone call to jax and the same service would cost me $270

Jax assured me that it does not affect my new car warranty in any way.

The 40K service involves:

* Changing the oil and filter/s

* Changing the air filter (which was already chnaged at 30K-no charge for that)

* Changing the dif oil

* Changing the spark plugs (which are giving me a bit of trouble sometimes, as the car wont start some mornings, happened about 4 times so far since the last service)

Re: Warranty Repairs

Only thing you need to remember about going to someone other than a Nissan dealer is it will stop you being elligible for the 3 year to 5 year warranty extension.

I will be going to Jax for my 10K which is coming up, just thought you might want to know.

Re: Warranty Repairs

Jalal,

Was that $270 price from Jax already with the cost of the air filter removed, or is that cost still to be deducted from the $270?

Changing spark-plugs at 40,000???

Are they the platinum-tipped ones? If so, they are supposed to last 80,000-100,000k's! Well that's what it says in my pulsar SSS manual...

Yep, I know that dviv, but I thought with this price difference who cares, especially that they gonna rip me off during the 3-5 year extension anyway.
