Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

well i had it in to nissan today, they stripped off the head, and found one screw missing from cylinder 1's butterfly plate emoticon , they did a compression test beforehand, and all was good, within specs.

there was no obvious damage to the cylinder or the bore, and the head seems fine, however they recommended i had the head sent off for checking, so thats being done next week.

if that passes ok, they will put it back together (with a new screw, and ive asked for all of them to be locktighted), and fingers crossed it will be ok, they seem optimistic, however it will still see me down approx $1700-1800, so for anyone else thinking about $300 being too much to check the screws, ask yourself, if you could find $1000's if it went wrong?

Luckily it looks like it got sucked out of the exhaust before it caused too much damage.
Fingers crossed.

Did they give you a copy of the compression test results? If not, ask them for a copy and we can tell you if it's within specs or not.

That is a sensible thing to do as it is sometime almost impossible to detect a hairline crack in the cylinder unless tested further.

If it passes OK, my advice to you is to sell the car! None of the xtrails with missing screws recovered from this and the affect will materialise with time in a form of excessive oil usage and loss of power.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

Well *if* you get a T31 petrol they have a different set up with NO butterflies / screws to come loose and cause problems.

I'd be inclined to keep driving it and see how it goes - if it starts to use excessive oil get rid of it then.

Anyway just my 2c worth.

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

Are these Screws the ones that when you remove the air intake pipe it displays a brass butterfly with two screws in it? If so mine are intact and tight, however, if there is a risk of them coming loose I would like to prevent that occurance, should I either remove them and loctite the screws or place shackproof star washers behind the heads or do both?

Any suggestions on this subject?

Regards
Concerned Paul

Nope Paul, these screws are located in the lower intake of the engine block itself at the back of the engine head and there are 8 of them. Have a look at the photos in this thread for details.

Nah mate, the butterfly valves on the QR25DE engine are located inside the intake manifilold. Its at the rear of the engine, between the block and firewall...the intake manifold needs to be removed to inspect/ repair.

I wouldnt be putting too much force on the throttle body butterfly...probably better to not touch it at all.

I was gunna put a link in for the thread....but this IS the correct thread.
Have a read mate, all the info is here.
Edit....spelling and "what Jalal said just before me" lol emoticon

Re: **Loose intake butterfly screws**

Thanks Jal....it looks as though I have to dig deeper into the Engine to get to these Butterfly screws, not the easy task I first thought, still it must be done for peace of mind. Is loctite the go or Star Washers, any thoughts?
