Re: bash plate

T31 X-Trailers,

The T31 bash plates are on their way to Sydney by sea and will arrive here mid July.

Please note that I have only ordered 15 of them (due to finances) so I will make it a priority to cover as many members of our forum as possible before the wider market.

This is the T31 Bash Plate which I will be receiving:

Final pricing to be confirmed in July.

Re: bash plate

Good, I gave the underside of mine a good tap-up again yesterday so it can't come soon enough. No real damage thankfully. It's a shame they on't have the cut-outs for sump plug etc, you wouldn't think it'd be that hard!

I hope the price isn't too outrageous...guess it'll be cheaper than a busted sump though.

Re: bash plate

Come to think of it and given the fact that the T31 bash plate will be much easier to remove than the style we currently have for the T30, I'd rather have that sump plug/bolt protected as well at all times. As you say, one hit to the sump plug or the sump itself can potentially lead to a much more expensive exercise.

Let me get the bash plates and we can then see if cutting a hole for the sump plug would be of any advantage.

Re: bash plate

A word of warning:

When I arrived @ Oberon on Friday, I noticed the front half of my bash-plate hanging down - the two bolts securing it in place along the front had worked their way out!!!

No damage was caused (luckily) and I found a spare bolt to fit the factory nut (which is welded into the chassis, used to secure the factory splash-guard) to temporarily secure it in place again.

At least now I have an excuse to make the gap larger around the bracket so I can fit my equaliser strap. (See Part 3 of Stockton January 2007 Trip Report to find out what I'm talking about. I must've forgotten to copy the relevant details into this thread back then).

That also might explain the loud clunk I heard from under the car during my last trip to Oberon last month (although I didn't notice the bash-plate hanging off back then or since then)!

Re: bash plate

Rich,

It's worth mentioning that you're talking about your home-made bash plate and not the imported ones!

Am not sure what type of bolts you used to secure it in place, but the ones that come with the T30 bash plate are pretty damn good and solid. I have checked mine a couple of times after going off-road (i.e. the Newnes trip) and they were all tight.

It still a good idea to check the bolts every now and then as you suggested.

Re: bash plate

The head of one of my bolts has been sheared off.
Anyone know of an easy way to get the rest of the bolt out of the hole so I can put another bolt in ?
In the past I heard of an "easy-out". Are these still available or will I have to drill it out and retap the hole ?

Re: bash plate

Kev,

The head of my radiator holding bracket screw has been sheared off as well, so I have used the smallest drill bit I could find and drilled through the bolt carefully and then reversed the drill, so it came out with it (after many attempts though). If the nut on the other end is an open type you might be able to push the bolt straight through with the drill without damaging the tread.

Re: bash plate

Kev, you could drill a small hole as Jalal said, then see if you can find a reverse-thread screw, and try screwing it into the hole you drilled into the bolt - or is that efectively how an "easy-out" works? I've heard of it, but never seen one before emoticon

Initially I had used the factory bolts that secure the splash-guard in place, but I am sure I changed them to high tensile bolts to hopefully prevent the stud from being sheered off in the event of an impact.

As for ensuring my bolts don't easily come out again, I was suggested to use a nylock nut, however as I mentioned previously, the nut is the factory-fitted nut which is welded to the chassis - does anyone know if nylock bolts are available? I wouldn't want to use super-glue or locktite, as it would make them too difficult to remove if needed. A spring washer is the only other option I can think of.
