Re: X-Trail - Microfilter
Hi Guys,
Just changed my microfilter and it has been sitting there for over a year.
Here is how it looks like
And here it is side by side with the new/clean filter
I found all sorts of rubbish that has been caught in the filter, leaves..etc and I guess without this filter being in place all of this rubbish would have found its way to the air-con fan. I don't need to tell what that could result in.
Check your microfilters guys and if you don't have one, get it!

Re: X-Trail - Microfilter
WOW, I would have never expected so much crap to be caught in this filter.
I’ve haven’t been too concerned about purchasing this filter, however from what you have just shown us, I think this is a must have item.
Amazing why this filter does not come standard, especially here is Australia with many dirt roads.

Re: X-Trail - Microfilter
Yes Noel and you would be breathing all this stuff in as well without this filter. Yuck!

Re: X-Trail - Microfilter
Well our filter is over 70000km old, and I had pulled it out a long time ago and it looked OK, however I pulled it out the other day to check and it was black. It's certainly been doing its job.
Dealership quoted $60 !!! I thought maybe $30 ish was reasonable. That didn't include fitting either.
I decided what the heck, try cleaning it! After all they wash out trucks air filters a couple of times before replacement.
I can tell you that the vacumm cleaner did nothing, so I sprayed the filter with some ordinary household cleaner (like for use on benchtops etc) let it soak for a while then hosed it out - hey presto - new filter!
I let it dry out for a couple of days and have refitted it now.
I'm sure I'll get another 20000km or so out of it.
We didn't have any leaves or other bits of rubbish in there, only fluff, dust and the bad stuff that makes the filter black.

Re: X-Trail - Microfilter
I purchased a new micro-filter today. The dealer wanter to charge me $62,
I said no way, I can buy it from a Sydney dealer for $40.
Apparently they can't even buy it for that price I was told. So due to my location and the cost of freight, we comprised on a price of $49.50
I was also the first person to purchase this micro filter for the X-Trail from the Cairns Dealership. In fact they firstly tried to convince me that this part didn't exist, , They never heard about it before.
I have my filter now fitted. Extremely easy install for a Series I, TI, in 2 minutes flat,

Re: X-Trail - Microfilter
Now I do not want to gloat, well only a little bit, but I thought I would comment. I feel very sorry for all you poor people that still live in the "big (dirty smelly) smoke". I left there six years ago. I now live in a clean country-air area, except for some dust.
Let me explain.
I took your advice and took out my cabin filter to check it out. I would add that I purchased and installed mine well before it was first mentioned on this site, so it has been there for awhile.
It was hardly discoloured at all, only the slightest trace (must have been from our Sydney trips) and had a small amount of dust and grass seeds in it. I blew compressed air over it to clean and put it back almost as good as new.
So, the bottom line is, check it by all means, but don't assume it will be as dirty as some others.
