Re: Xtrail Snorkel
Yeah Tony the noise is mostly the whoosh of air being sucked in. Starting to really like the sound. Can really hear what the engine is doing.

Re: Xtrail Snorkel
Yeah so it is the effect of the turbo in mine. I thought that might be the case. I'll show you the 'whoosh' in a couple of weeks.

Re: Xtrail Snorkel
I have been keeping my eye out for someone to take the first step on fitting a snorkel to a T31 and that looks bloody amazing! Job VERY well done.
As a man who is semi mechanically minded, and with a difficulty rating out of 10, how difficult was the whole project? Do you think it could be done in a weekend quite easily?

Re: Xtrail Snorkel
Firstly I don't really wanna give it a difficulty rating because it will vary for everyone based on what skills you already have and what you need to learn. The most difficult part though is getting the correct/best position. As the snorkel doesn't fit on the panel it moves around heaps. There is a sort of 'sweet spot' but really it's all up to you to find the best position. Kev's template that he made for the snorkel on his T30 helps a lot with lining up the bolt holes once you have found the best position. The template doesn't include the round hole for the piece I made up so again you need to use you judgement here.
Once the holes are done and you can comfortably rest the snorkel on the body with the bolts through the panel the rest is fairly easy. I don't really have any fibre-glassing skills at all but it's pretty much a case of whack heaps of the stuff on and smooth it as best you can. Just be prepared to do plenty of sanding if you go overboard.
As for whether it could be done over a weekend. Short answer is no. This is not because it takes more than 48 hours labour but purely because it needs to be done in steps so that everything can dry properly. I attached the bolts and circular intake section and sealed them up then had to wait a day for that to dry. Then I made the mould and had to wait a day for that to dry. Next day was sanding and painting (2 coats) and obviously a day for that to dry. Then when I finally installed it I sealed all the bolt/intake holes as well as the internal plumbing and had to wait for that to dry before driving anywhere. I basically did it over several afternoons and a chunk of Saturday.

Re:
A mate of mine has suggested that the Toyota Surf snorkel may be a better fit for the T31 so we're going to try one once he gets it organised...

Re: Xtrail Snorkel
Toddyh, I think the difficulty rating might be reaching the higher end of my skill set for this task. It's not the fibreglassing or the plumbing that I am most scared about, rather the adapter plate you made to fit through the panel, and of course the placement of the snorkel itself.
Do you have a stencil for that adapter plate at all that you could put up on the forum? and what was it made of? Also the plumbing, how much of that was included in the kit?
I've also heard along the lines that diff breathers would be a suitable addition when installing a snorkel because of the expected temperature when going through the water, have you considered this yet?

Re: Xtrail Snorkel
I made the piece by tracing the internal part of the snorkel onto some 2mm check plate. The circular section is a 51mm diameter galvanised gutter pipe from bunnings. Everything else is included in the snorkel kit.
As far as diff breathers I have considered it but not really looked into it. If you are planning on doing deep crossings I would definitely consider it.

Re:
Toddyh,
Firstly, great job mate. That looks fantastic.
Could I ask a personal question, and ask how much this whole project set you back from start to finish.
Secondly, are you keen to install more ???? I would be a serious customer... lol.
