Re: Xtrail Snorkel

I see it now...the snorkel has a slight turn-in just after the turn-up and this touches on the top of the cowling as the snorkel is moved further down.

In that case I'd keep it so the top of the snorkel foot runs along the top of the cowling and then make a spacer the same outline as the snorkel foot so it looks like a 2-piece install

If you have a look at the bigger 4WD's, 90% of them have black snorkels as it is the main colour of the Safari brand.
As far as I know the only snorkels which are colour-coded will be OEM ones, or those which the owner has coloured themselves.

Hey you have black tyres so it will match them emoticon

Mine is black on a Silver Xtrail and it sticks out...more the attention grabber emoticon

I have no idea how I would go about doing that Kev. Very limited fibreglass skills. I guess I could putty up the gap...

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

I would try finding a plastics place that does custom machining.
Should be easy for them to get a block and shape it then drill the 3 bolt holes and the airtube cutout.

Not saying it will be cheap, but if it is around $100 then more than worth the professional look of it I think.

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

I might use putty to make a mould and then take that to a plastics place. Probably easier than them trying to get a mould of my car. Will mean a temporary instal of the snorkel to get the mould I guess.

If you can get your hands on some foam packing blocks then try shaping them

Re:

Todd,
Firstly, how big is the gap, 10 15mm?
All snorkels come with a sponge type gasket that is around 6-10mm thick that goes between the body of the car and the snorkel.

Kevs idea about the fibreglass fill is a good one, fill the gaps with polystyrene and use them as a template to form a reverse mould.
Then but a tin of fibreglass putty (2 part with hardener) and keep building up until your happy with it.
You sand or grind it into shape when dry.

This is what I would do,
Find some high density black foam and squeeze that into the gaps.
Make it a little fatter than needed so when you tighten the snorkel it would compress it to the body.

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

Max gap is around 15mm (guessing). No sponge type gasket with this one. Would have been handy.

I've decided it's time for me to improve my fibreglass skills. I'm gonna have a crack and making a 2nd piece as Kev suggested. Probably use something like a fibreglass filler.

I was considering using something like this. In theory this would bond to the existing snorkel and end up making a single piece.

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

Hey Todd,

Just as a reference I went to a local plastics and engineering place this morning to enquire about getting a piece made up for the spacer.
They said they could easily make something for you out of Nylon (like used for the cutting boards), in black which is UV stabilised for $150.
Either they could measure the piece if you brought the Xtrail and snorkel to them or they could fabricate the piece from a copy of something you made out of the packing polystyrene.
If you want their details let me know and I'll PM them to you.

I suggested you were thinking of fibreglassing something and their suggestion was to use something to fill the inside like the stuff surfboards use. Then a thin sheet of closed-cell foam as a gasket between both the snorkel and the spacer as well as the spacer and the cowling...also don't forget to rust treat the holes in the cowling as soon as you drill them to prevent moisture startiong the oxidation.
