Re: Driving Lights opinions
Sam,
I believe you're talking about the roof lights mounted on your hyper roof rails which come standard on the ST-R?
This is true, but getting them as an option for other xtrails is NOT an option
This is a factory fit and can not be ordered as an optional accessory.
That's why I put 4 lights on my roof. hehehe

Yes, I'm, talking about the roof mounted lights in the Hyper roof rails (bloody hard to source cheap, cost effective crossbars for these though, didn't think about that befor I got the car mmm... )

Also in the same redundant logic stream, the main reason why I went for the STR....
PS: good to see you back Noel

Keep an eye on eBay. I've seen ST-R corss bars there for $95/pair a while ago.

I would have done exactly the same thing if the ST-R was available at that time when I bought mine I love those hyper roof rails!
Hope is not all lost for me and this could well be the biggest project of them all on my part This will have to be told in another thread as it will be considered "madness" on my part by some. hahahaha

Brendon, if you're on a budget, I think you can pretty much rule out Lightforce - I think they're the dearest of the bunch!
Not with the forum discount we now have from Sutherland Shire Off-Road They're in fact very affordable, but the only reason I wouldn't get them is the one described by Noel above and which I have discovered from the first moment I saw them at a 4WD shop.
Light-output wise they're the best and there is no question about that!

It's good to be back.

Noel, how is ARB (or any store for that matter) going to be able to demonstrate the lights they are selling? They'd have to make up a darkroom that was at least 1km long In either this thread or another on the same subject, some members have postes photos showing examples of the effects of their driving lights...
Rich,
Setting up a darkroom is not really practical, and it's not what I mean't. Most ARB staff generally buy ARB products, so it shouldn't be too hard to organise a staff member to do a test (afterhours) during the night on a dark piece of road. I'm sure they would also have customers that would be willing to show you also.
And yep in THIS thread you will see my post testing the IFP Fatboys and also one pic of the Lightforce 170's in action.
If ARB were genuinely interested in making a sale because of insufficent specifications, they would willing provide this test on request.

Nathan,
Lightforce are a great performing driving light, and Rich's 240's are even better. Just remember about the lack of security, and if yours get stolen, don't blame me, you have been warned, .
Another big factor that you all need to be aware of with any driving light is the size of the unit, and the amount of obstruction they will be for your radiator and air intake.

Re: Driving Lights opinions
Brendon,
Personally I’ve found the combo lense on the Lightforce 170’s to be a waist of time, and seem to hinder the amount of light produced.
The current setup I have is perfect for me. I have the standard pencil lenses on both the Lightforce 170’s in blue, which gives me heaps in long distance light. There is not much difference between the supplied clear lense and the blue. The blue lense is for increased clarity.
The IPF Fatboys compliment the Lightforce 170’s by adding increased light up close and to the side.
I still would have liked to have the Lightforce 240's but have compromised due their physical size.
If your concern is for spotting roos, then you can still adjust the pencil beams out slightly to the side and in my opinion this is better for spotting roos than a combo/wide spead lense.
