posticon Axle Tramp (front end bouncing)

Just wondering if any of our other members (manual owners)may have felt something similar to what I am feeling. Now B4 I get all the reply saying you shouldn`t be spinning the wheels on purpose and that the car isn`t designed for it ( I know you have all done it at some point emoticon )

When I spin off the start or pull 2nds the whole front end just bounces really bad knocking through the floor. Problem is the car never used to do that. From new it always did nice and smooth spins.

So b4 I go and blow up the service department was wondering if there may be a reason that someone knows of.

Thanks guys

Re: Axle Tramp (front end bouncing)

Well I have to ask 'why?' but the only bits that could (easily) change are the tyres ( wearing out/ temp etc) or the clutch ( about buggered). If your spinning in 2nd ( so trying to put loads of torque through) I'd say its your clutch. Why not put it in auto and accelerate faster?

I have to answer "why not" hehehe nah just kidding its more like pulling out into traffic quickly. the car has only 11000k and has only been drivin for 3months. Tires have full tread and are always at operating temp. Have never used auto at all, used lock on the sand but after reading how after a certain speed it reverts itself back to auto.

Maybe a bit off the track here but another possibility could be that your ABS sensors are malfunctioning from being dirty from your sand driving ventures.

Re: Axle Tramp (front end bouncing)

Shane, you're a hoon!! emoticon

Wheel spin in any car is not desirable, I am not sure why you do it? It is not good for the tyres, the car or for fast acceleration off the line. If you are doing it to look "cool" then you should be driving a Barina with a huge sports muffler and 18" chrome rims!! emoticon

Is this in the dry or in the wet? Are you on standard factory tyres?

In the wet I always have the 4WD in Auto, why not have the extra benefit of AWD when you need it??

Anyway, all reasoning aside, since my suspension and tyre changes I do not experience much wheel spin these days and I drive the car quite hard. The factory tyres on a series II are shocking, very low road grip especially in the wet.

It could be clutch, do you get clutch burning smells after such an event? If your clutch has gone after 11,000km then I'm sorry but you should really reconsider your driving style.

It might also be a wheel alignment issue or a shock absorber has gone. All worth checking.

Sounds like an engine mount / or suspension a issue. Bit hard to guess without hearing it.

Re: Axle Tramp (front end bouncing)

Shane
It sound's like you have never had a front wheel drive car before this is part of front wheel drives make up. To get axle Tramp you have to drop the clutch and keep the boot into it. This happens in rear wheel cars but only when your shocks are shot. You can replace the shock for a faster acting shock this will rectify the problem a little bit or you could turn a dial in the Exy and it is all fixed.
You could get bilstein inserts the only down fall would be the Exy is off the road for a couple of weeks.

Re: Axle Tramp (front end bouncing)

One symptom and possibly many causes...

I had the same "problem" in my Pulsar (I know it's not the Pulsar forum, but I wouldn't think it's possible to get axle tramp in our automatic X-Trail emoticon Plus, alot of people seem to be coming across issues I've already experienced in previous cars (and at least the Pulsar is a Nissan)).

Ok, back to where I was... I mainly got axle tramp when trying to warm up the tyres doing burn-outs at Eastern Creek just before doing a quarter-mile run. I could never put it down to what caused it - and it's probably a combination of all of the following - tyres too grippy for the surface under too much aceleration (or perhaps maybe not quite enough acceleration?), un-matched springs & shocks. If Dave4x4 is right in saying that it happens when your shocks are shot, then my Koni inserts (in the pulsar) must've been damaged when they were installed...

What actually happens with axle tramp is that the tyre grips, then jumps up off the ground (loses traction) then when it hits the ground again, it grips again, and so the process repeats itself until you reduce acceleration (I never wanted to try and apply more accelerator in case it made it worse!). It was always the left side doing the tramping, which incidentally was always the wheel that spun with quick take-offs from lights under normal driving conditions. Perhaps that had something to do with shorter or longer drive-shafts?

Assuming your X-Trail is standard, with factory shocks and springs and no aftermarket sway-bars or strut tower bars etc, I'd assume it's the tyres - if the standard springs and shocks aren't stuffed already (and I highly doubt that!).

It may be a long shot, but perhaps the tyres are out of balance (as previously mentioned) but I think you'd feel if they were out of balance by cruising at varying high speeds.

Re: Axle Tramp (front end bouncing)

I think you'd definitely have this effect if shockies (strut inserts) or springs were past it, but unlikely in a low mileage car.
Maybe there is a worn bush or two there somewhere, lower control arms??
Engine mount is a good sugestion too.

We've raced quite a number of different cars with our Xtrail, beating nearly all of them much to their surprise - under controlled conditions of course! We've never had any axle tramp yet, but the big difference is we leave the 4WD in Auto the whole time, we virtually never spin a wheel even in the wet and the car just accelerates into the distance.
