Re: Interior Light

A little bit of 'sideways' thinking can often assist in a successful install.
Good job there John, well done.

Hi John,

I think this was a Sound Card or CD Audio cable. It is available from any Jaycar store (part # PL-0756) or should also be available from any computer store.

Re: Interior Light - HELP - INSTALLATION PROBLEM

CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP

I have installed the key-light into the housing - it all fitted very well.

I ran a hot wire from the dome light to one terminal of the new light, and ran an earth wire from the other. That all went very well also.

I inspected the dome light and found two wires to it plus the fitting is earthed.

I connected my new feed-wire first to one of the wires and then also tried the other.
** With the red and blue wire connected my new key-light worked perfectly - ALL THE TIME, even with the key out and doors closed.
** With the red and yellow/orange wire connected it worked whenever the KEY WAS TURNED ON, but not with the door open.
** It did nothing, as expected when I connected it to the dome-light earth (screw to roof).

So, I have a lovely looking key-light that I do not know how to wire in.

HAS ANYONE ELSE fitted it successfully yet?

PLEASE SOMEONE - ANYONE - tell me how to connect it.

(My vehicle is a series 1)

Re: Interior Light

John,

The control wire for the door activation of the dome light is a switched 0V.
Try connecting the light as shown below
Image

You can take the +ve from anywhere but it is easier from the dome light.

Re: Interior Light

Thank you Kev, but

What does "OV" stand for?

It seems from the diagram that I should run two wires to the dome light and to connect one to each of the connections there. Is this right?

But then I get confused when it is suggested that I can get the +ve anywhere.

I would love to hear from someone who has got a successful installation utilising the dome light, or in any other way for that matter.

Also, Jalal said he wired his illuminated door sills from the dome light. How did you make it work Jalal?

Thanks.

Re: Interior Light

Hi John,

OV means -ve or zero volts.
The dome light gets its +ve from the battery and then the control module switches the connection to -ve, completing the power circuit.
Because the control module switches the -ve, this is why you can get the +ve from anywhere, but yes it is easier and best to take 2 wires from the dome light.

Re: Interior Light

Hi John,

You can just get the +ve power from the dome light and in series I it should be the red&white wire, the -ve you can ground the wire anywhere on the body of the car. I got mine grounded to a metal bracket behind the fuse box (you can feel it by hand) otherwise, you can tap in the second wire in the dome light if you wish (I can't remember the colour of the second wire)

NOTE to Series II and 2006 Models: The wire colours are different in your models, so the positive is red/yellow wire in your roof light, and the negative is red/black of the roof light.

Re: Interior Light

I tried that Jalal, and for good measure tried the other wire. My results were as previously posted.

However,, none of my wires had white on them, one was red and dark blue and the other red and yellow/orange.

For a ground I used a screw into the body behind the dash. The earth is working.

Looks like I will have to get some more wire and run two new wires.

Re: Interior Light

John,

This may seem like saying the obvious, but have you tested the operation of the key light ring by connecting to the car battery direct? The plug you're using may be the cause.

Just a thought.
