Light Turbo/Supercharger of the X-Trail.....How???

Not sure if this has been covered.

I am wondering about light turbocharging for my X-Trail. A similar setup to SR20DET... Just a smallish turbo, Small Intercooler, running around 6psi, Im not after a FireBreather just a bit more poke.

Do the SR20 Turbo Manifolds bolt up to the QR25?? or would i need a custom one? Also would i need to replace Injectors, fuel pump.. or anything else?? Also would i need a WOLF3D or similar to run the setup?

Thanks

You will have to take some compresion out the motor or use a low boost turbo set up.

Wasn't Brett looking into supercharging his?

Or maybe it was someone else...

It was Adam and who knows maybe Brett now too LOL

Andrew, read all about "supercharging" and turbocharging" the QR25DE engine HERE

Google brings up many more discussions about it too.

Something to keep in mind that the max. power our engine type can go up to no matter what power mod you do to it is 250hp (which is not bad at all and am slowly getting there without turbocharging) emoticon

Re: Light Turbo Charging of X-Trail.....How???

If you wanted to get serious about a low boost turbo setup in Australia

Custom exhaust manifold = $300
Brand new GT28RS Ball Bearing Turbo = $1100
Front Mounted Intercooler + piping = $500
Exhaust upgrade to 2.5" = $600
Bosch 044 Fuel Pump = $200
Labour charge for above work = $1000
Standalone ECU or Piggy back ECU = $1000
Dyno Tuning to suit = $800

Total expenses = $5500

Running 6~8psi thru a front mount intercooler on standard internals would be OK and I suspect that 250Hp would be easy to reach with this boost pressure.

Of course based on Jalal's N/A mods, N/A is the way I would go on the QR25. But the added mid range torque of the turbo would be great if you had the money to burn.

Re: Light Turbo Charging of X-Trail.....How???

Found this in either the Hot4's or Fast4's mag recently.
Force-Flow Electric Supercharger
It comes as either a single or twin unit but is mainly meant for full-throttle power boost.
It uses a small brushed dc motor turbine similar to modelling electric flight motors which give it a short life.
If the motor could be changed to a brushless motor and a speed controller linked into the throttle then it could be worth trying.

Kev, that looks very "gimmicky" to me... In my pulsar I had a fan "forcing" air into my air filter - mainly to draw cooler air from outside the engine bay through the 5inch ducting, and while it didn't actually have a compensated MAF sensor, I wouldn't say it created any more power...

I'd be interested to see if that device actually works. In one of their episodes, "Mythbusters" put a handful of these sorts of "power-up" and "fuel efficiency" devices to test, and they all failed. I guess the old saying still applies - if it worked, the vehicle manufacturer's would've incorporated it into their design...

Re: Light Turbo Charging of X-Trail.....How???

Yes it does look gimmicky.
Working with model ducted fan aircraft as I have, I can say some of these things put out quite a bit of airflow.
The idea of trying to force this into an intake manifold would give a slight increase in pressure and hence a slight 'supercharging' effect.
The amount would obviously depend on the amount of NA airflow the engine already develops at full throttle.
Now that I have gained more knowledge from this forum on CAI, I think the claimed % increase may probably be more due to the CAI included in the kit.
