Re: Tyre Carrier

Hey Guys,

As for the departure angle, I don't really do any driving that this would effect departure angle. I mostly do beach or rough dirt road driving with the occasional creek crossing. I'm concerned that the opposite lock option won't fit now that I have the high tech exhaust. In the photos on the opposite lock website the steel bar is in line with the bottom of the tow hitch. That's where the high tech tips are in line with.

I'm afraid the steel bar will hit the exhaust. Thoughts Jalal???
As for the Jerry cans I want them outside the car and up here on long trips I have to carry petrol as its not available at all servo's. The only thing I ever put up on the roof is my second spare and spare fuel. I don't tow my trailer up the Gibb River rd so I can't put it in there, I have the ability to repair tyres but still always carry a second spare.

As for the recovery point, the TireGate branded one allows you to retain your tow point so you wouldn't loose your recovery point.

Re:

I'm very interested in one of those 3 different spare wheel carrier options with the 2 Jerry Cans. It would solve my problem of where to put everything that I normally put on the roof. Since I'm looking at some sort of roof tent, but no idea what one yet.

I need to make time to get to one of the bigger 4WD shows next year in Brisbane (or near there).

Re: Tyre Carrier

Ann,

If you have a T31 the opposite lock one looks pretty good. I think the tiregate one is better as you can retain your tow point however im turned off by the fact that that it doesn't a mechanism to keep it open so you're at risk of it swinging closed.

I am too interested in a rooftop tent and will loose the space up top. Have a look at the 4wd supercentre website im interested in the tigerz 11 roof top tent. they were on sale for $895 2 weeks ago with free shipping. im waiting until xmas as they sometimes have huge sales

Re:

Ann, my OL wheel carrier is up for sale + freight. Let me know if you are interested.

If you have the OL wheel carrier and get some some to fabricate the jerry can carrier for the left side of the car using the towbar as the attachment point, you probably can have the best of both words. Not sure how the weight distribution will work though. If you are not using the jerry can carrier, you can always take it off and still keep the towbar while keeping the wheel carrier on.

Max, is the import tax included with that price?

Re: Tyre Carrier

I'm sure some of you have viewed this already on my members ride thread but Jalal asked me to update the thread here too.

I have purchased and fitted a tow bar mounted rear wheel carrier to my T30. The brand is Tyre Trek and they are based in Qld but their stockists are TJM i believe. I just dealt with Brett from Tyre Trek myself and he was easy to deal with.

So it is tow bar mounted and has optional accessories.

TYRE TREK PRICELIST RRP (inc GST)
Tyre Trek Main Unit $995.00
Dual Jerry Holder $295.00
Shovel Holder $130.00
Light Pole $70.00

I purchased the main unit + dual jerry can mounts + light pole although I haven't put the light pole on yet. Brett also ships Australia wide.

Now the Tyre Trek does come with a warning. Brett recommends that the Tyre Trek be fitted to a car with a tow ball weight capacity of 200KG. Now before everyone starts to tell me that the T30 has a ball weight of 150kg let me explain.

Brett recommends the 200kg ball weight to cover all sizes of spare wheels. The Tyre Trek is engineered to carry a 35inch wheel, dual jerry cans, light pole and light, shovel holder and shovel and high lift jack mount and a high lift jack. All the tyre trek optional mounts including the unit weigh around 40kg.

That being said I didn't buy the high lift jack or shovel mounts so already my unit is weighing less than 40kg. I discussed this at length with Brett and with the size of my wheel 27 inch 2 full jerry cans and a light the unit will still come in well under the 150kg ball weight. As i said its engineered to take a 35 inch wheel (but lets be honest I'm not putting 35's on the xtrail).

Keep all this info in mind if you decide to purchase one. I thought long and hard and looked at other options but decided this would suit my needs.

The unit can open and lock to 90 degrees or to 180 degrees. It also has an anti rattle mechanism which you tighten with a 24mm bolt that stops the unit rattling in your tow bar.

I think I would prefer the jerry cans either side of the wheel so it doesn't stick out so far
