Re: Ethanol use in x trail

Hi Guys,

I am sure you have already started to see the standard unleaded fuel disappear from petrol stations and it has now been replaced by E5 and E10.

If you are wondering if this fuel is suitable for your xtrail (and other cars you have), refer to THIS table.

Basically, those of you driving an exy manufactured before 2004 are not able to use E5 and E10 and you will be stuck filling-in with premium 98

There is a long term effect to the engine components in Nissan engines prior to 2004 and while one or two uses may not cause serious damage, prolonged use of Ethanol blend fuels will do so.

Re: Ethanol use in x trail

Hi All

This is my experience with ethonal fuel. I am the first owner of my 2007 T30 exy and I was using E10 and regular unleaded but most often E10 as I did the research and the Nissan website even stated cars built after 2004 are OK on E10. The first year of owning the exy I had no problems. But in the second year I began having some hard to start troubles with my exy. It has been to Nissan atleast 5 times to be inspected for the starting problem and they always say "It is perfect the CONSULT computer check has no error codes! ". On the last visit Nissan said because I have used E10, it has damaged my car so I should only used Premium fuel! I have been using Premium fuel since and it is going OK on Premium now but still sometimes has a starting problem when the engine is warm.

I think it must be fuel system problem as I can hear a humming sound or gargling sound coming from the fuel pump under the rear seat, but Nissan also said there is nothing wrong here. I suggested replacing the fuel filter but they said its a non maintenance item! My warranty is now finished with no help from Nissan!

I have also recently found that the fuel filter can be changed and will try that. Has anyone had a similar stituation?

Re: Ethanol use in x trail

Hey Guys,

I haven't entered this debate until now, because I wanted to spend some time evaluating the different fuel blends in my Exy. I have a 2006 T30 and can run on blended fuel, but having recently done over 8000km to FNQ and back, and using tanks fulls of both E10 blend and 95 or 98 octane fuel, I will never use E10 by choice again.

The higher octane fuel is much more responsive, gets much better fuel economy (in my case as much as 1-1.5 litres per 100km) and in many places we travelled, was not much more expensive than E10 was. In fact, in regional Qld, the 98 octane was the same price as E10 is in NSW (thanks to our wonderful State charges). emoticon

Off road, I reckon 95 or 98 also gives you much better low throttle control and allows you to crawl more easily over rough patches. Because Ethanol burns to produce less power than petrol, with the E10 you need a higher throttle application to maintain power and, though it's not much, it makes a difference (especially in a manual gearbox). Also, Ethanol and water love each other, so if you're planning to get the Exy seriously wet, I would always use pure petrol (which is oil based). All the advice I've read is that for any engine likely to see water (including marine, dirt bikes... even lawn mowers) never use a ethanol blend.

As an experiment, over the last few months, I have asked my wife to tell me when she thinks I've filled the tank with E10 and then done it without telling her. She's picked it everytime. In a manual, you can really tell the power difference when you let out the clutch.

So, it's only my opinion, and I don't know if there are engine damage issues with E10 or not, but the higher octane just gives a better drive and, with better economy, is not much more expensive to run.

Re: Ethanol use in x trail

Having used 98ron e10 for a long time (5+ years in a vx commodore and 3 years in a 97 explorer using a min of 40l in each per week) I have to say i'm skeptical on engine damage that occurs on a car rated suitable for it(the explorer is btw, specifically states so in the owners manual) however there could be outside factors like bad blends(high ethanol content).

As noted above, mileage and power can vary between a good and an average tank of the stuff. but when the price difference is right, (anywhere from 4-10c/L down here which adds up very quickly) i've found it's worth it emoticon

As for the t30, i'll stick to ron 95/98 non blended for mine given it doesn't comply emoticon

Re: Ethanol use in x trail

Hi List, I bought an 2002 xtrail in 2005, I never used anything but E10 in the 6 yrs I owned it, I tow a caravan on occasions, the performance was great, I now have a 2008 ST-L with 30,000
on it, and am using E10 in it as well, and dont intend to use anything else, I change the oil + filter every 6000, and use Magnatec oil.
           Cheers Kevin..

Re:

At least now that the Government has done a backflip on the sale of regular unleaded petrol. It will still be available at the pumps for some time yet.
I try and only use unleaded where I can, try to avoid anything with Ethanol in it.
