Rich,

Have you checked that the cooling fans were working and with such heat they would have been working overtime.

When I popped the bonnet to check to see if anything was wrong in the engine bay (and noticed the power steering fluid boiling) both the electric fans behind the radiator were operating.

I heard/read somewhere that one of these fans is for the A/C? Can anyone confirm this? Also, the A/C "radiator" is further forward (closer to the front grille) than the engine radiator, and does not appear to have it's own fan...

Re: Cooling

Hi Rich,

In the Series 1 both fans operate together, for low or high speed.
The A/C only affects the resulting fan speed.

The following wiring diagram shows only 2 controls from the ECM ... 1 for low speed and 1 for high speed.

The following diagrams show the effect of vehicle speed and coolant temp on fan speed.

If you only have 1 fan running then there might be a blown fuse, faulty relay or faulty fan motor.

Re: Cooling

Reset the ecu before a 600km round trip at the weekend so shouldn't be running too lean. Also topped up the coolant which had been forced out when it was heating and kept a close eye on this. It still overheated. Guess the next step is a cooling system checkup - or maybe try going back to unleaded petrol.
Electric fans - is there an easy way to check these are operating at all (apart from stopping when it warms up and having a look).

Re: Cooling

Can anyone tell me where the temp gauge should be sitting when driving normally.

I am sure mine used to sit about 1/4 of the way up, but now it is just under 1/2. My radiator is fine, the coolant is only 5,000km old and there are no obstructions.

Jalal, the link on page 1 to the casting sand issue is not working.

P.S. Mine sits just on the upper edge of the "D" square (AUTO)

Re: Cooling

Brett,

Mine sits not quite under half, say about 2/5 of the way up the guage. It doesn't take long to get to this temp either but stays constant the whole time whether cruising or doing it tuff in the dirt or beach.

Mine is only 2 years old now if that makes any difference, it shouldn't though. emoticon
