The problem is solved. I wrote out the 1296 code possibilities (a 4-digit number with possible digits 1-6). I then entered them one by one. To continue entering codes after each set of three tries, I disconnected and reconnected the battery (I made up a simple switch to automate this). On the 1221st try out of 1296 the radio came on. The code given me by the Nissan dealer which contained a '9' was obviously incorrect. I jotted down the correct code in several places in my manuals.

When you mentioned you had a T30 I checked my book and code and was about to say you must have been given a code for a T31 2007 model since the codes for the T30 radio all only contain digits 1-6.
