Nissan & the Dealer come good re faulty Exhaust Manifold/Cat.converter
Re 2002 T1 86,000k
Lately I have become aware of a noise that has me puzzled. My wife has been complaining for awhile but I am just a little deaf I could not initially hear it. When my son-in-law agreed with my wife I had to listen. He heard it when she drove off.
My wife claimed she heard it when driving & the engine was put under load, (ie. accelerating or going up a hill).
I can hear it best when the car is stationary and the engine is revved. Sounds like a loud exhaust or air leak. When the motor is running at a fixed speed the noise is not there. I even changed back to my old standard air filter to see of that made a difference, but it did not.
It definitely appears to be around the motor and I removed the two shields from the manifold and cat. to check for any obvious leaks without success. If it was an intake manifold leak I believe it would effect the running, but the moter runs as smooth as ever.
My Cat. converter was previously checked and found to be ok at the early 2005 recall.
It is not the "diesel" noise that others talk of, I have been aware of that from when the car was new.
I will take it to the dealer in Orange to see what they say. But I don't have a lot of faith in country dealers!
Have any of you any experience of this noise?

Hi John,
I suspect it would be the famous factory muffler which many of us have replaced due to factory defect, but if you're saying it's not that type of noise, then it could be something else.
The symptoms you have described match the muffler fault exactly.
While you think that the sound is coming from near the motor, it is actually the muffler transferring the sound to the front of the car through the exhaust and making it more audible at the front of the car (under the hand-brake handle to be exact)
Let us know how you go with the dealer, but insist they check the muffler too.

Further to my visit to the dealer re above.
The dealer reported it as a leak where the sensor is attached to the combined cat.converter/exhaust manifold: A very costly piece of hardware.
They did not have one in stock & have to order it in, so that will mean another round trip of 140km to get it fitted.
However, that is the bit that was the subject of the recall & my car was inspected and cleared at the time. The dealer will apply to Nissan for special consideration (car is 4 yrs old). There may be some hope they will do the right thing - as well they should!
Has anyone else had any luck with post-warranty claims? or with this particular problem?

Jalal, I would love an upgrade of not only the exhaust system, but to all my systems, and also the car!!! I spotted a new Ti today in the new silver/pewter colour - looked great. Now if only I had another $20g.

The part in question is Oxygen Sensor aka O2 Sensor which was the part affected by the recall for sure.
If there is a leak there, it means the O2 sensor has started to disintegrate, which could mean further problems much more serious than just having to replace it.
This is how it looks like taken off
Now if that grey ceramic part of the O2 sensor is broken or starting to come-off. You have problems!
The broken parts may find their way inside the engine and damage it greatly.
If I was in your place I would be Insisting on a visual inspection of the O2 sensor Before they replace it.
If the O2 sensor is broken/damaged in any way, this should be covered by the Official Nissan Recall 100% (no matter if your exy was checked and cleared then)
If this continues for long, you WILL get the engine check light and this means that sensor is no longer able to measure the temp. of your engine and the ECU will record that as a fault.
This part costs around $180.00 from Nissan and I wouldn't pay a cent if I was in your place!
Please don't leave it at that and insist on the visual inspection of the O2 sensor as mentioned. This is VERY serious!
Please keep us updated and while they're waiting to hear from Nissan, keep an eye on your dash for that engine check light.

Brett,
On the driver's side door pillar (front section) you should have a white sticker with this number P5206
This is the campaign number for the O2 sensor recall.
Nissan did not include any sticker on the service manual, but gave us hard-copies of the actual recall inspection.
If the O2 sensor was replaced at that time, you can only trust that the dealer has actually changed it, but I don't think they will/can take that risk at all (by not changing it) as it could lead to a much bigger problem down the track and they wouldn't leave themselves open like that. The change of the O2 sensor would also be recorded on that inspection invoice.
If you don't have any of the above to prove that the recall was carried-out on your car (provided it was affected by the recall in the first place) you can call Nissan Australia to confirm that for you by giving them the VIN and it will show-up in their database. If the recall was carried-out, you can ask for a copy of it to be sent/mailed to you.
