Re: Ark pak set up

Hi am looking at the ark pak for the back of my t31. Curious as to how you mounted the pak to prevent unwanted movement especially in accident situations. I have 6m of 6mm cable have read the how to run the cable and am confident that I can run the cable (famous last words) but would like to hear of your experience/tips/do's and don'ts for this install.
My plan is to run the cable to ark pak to charge that while driving and run my 50L Waeco off of the ark pak. Plus of course when at camping spot remove ark pak from car to tent site to use as power supply for whatever including the waeco.
regards

I don't have any permanent tie down method just simply stretch occy straps all over the palce to suitable tie down points. I have never bounced around too much with Arkpak and fridge in car.

Arkpak (from BCF on special) $399
130AH AGM deep cycle battery (from Power Crank battery outlet) $300
8 meters twin 6b&s cable (ebay $79 (included anderson plug each end. Removed 1 plug and cut off excess cable to make extension lead)
Battery cable lugs to suit 6b&s cable (from REPCO) 4 for about $7 from memory. Used 3. Can get cheaper on ebay.
MATSON VSR (ebay) approx $48 include postage on special, (currently &41.95 + postage online from Australian Direct)

I purchasd a heavy duty crimper from Jaycar for about $25. I preferred to crimp rather than solder due to movement of terminating lugs while bouncing along.

2 x 40amp circuit breakers (ebay from overseas) $18.90 dlelivered,

So all up approximately $854 give or take (exclude crimper)

Re: Dual Batteries

With the costs of a dual battery system i thought it was too much money for something i wouldnt be using to its full potential.

I ended up buying this:

https://www.autobarn.com.au/electus-starting-aid-battery-operation-el21170-mb3694

What a fantastic item, i charge it up at home before going on a camping trip, its got 2 12v sockets, a usb socket, an air compressor, a light, an inverter. inbuilt jump leads to start cars up to a 6 litre engine pretty much everything you need as well as being able to charge from 12v meaning while camping in the evening i can run an led bar to light up my camp area and also charge my laptop via the inverter and also my phone on using the one item. Then the next morning and driving along plug it into the 12v socket in the boot of the Xtrail and let it charge up.
The inverter is fantastic and charged my laptop up from flat to full in very little time (aprox. 15-20mins).

I also bought the unit on sale for $150, so for a fraction of the price of a dual battery setup id definently recommend it to anyone that needs an extra power supply while camping.

Re:

Thanks Mants,

That looks like a very nice unit indeed. I did the usual "price check" and it can be bought for $145 (free postage) on evilbay.

Make sure you chuck a review in the Gadget Reviews section of the forum HERE. Thanks

Re: Dual Batteries

Yeah I have a similar unit with 12volts outlets, compressor etc which is great as a battery booster or for powering waeco, or connecting heavier duty compressor when tyres need inflating or on picnics or short camping trips.
The need to recharge it daily via the car 12volt power outlet however was annoying.
However, the ArkPak serves when the vehicle is stationary for anything up to 4 days...or often the fridge is left in tent for several days and not in vehicle when touring around for the day.
With the dual battery set up I can now confidently quick charge the 130AH GSM battery in the Arkpak via the anderson plug after 3-4 days of use before battery discharges to less than 50% charge.

So, horses for courses. The portable units are great (and heaps cheaper) for using when able to keep charged daily but is unsuitable for me when I leave fridge etc in tent for days while off tripping around.

Quite right Dave and those portable units take 12 Hrs to charge by 12V (without any extra drain like a connected fridge) which is quite a lot of driving between camps.
The portable units also only have a capacity approximately 10-15% of the fixed battery systems so mainly small power-draw items for short times and if used too long would not have any spare capacity for jump-starting the next morning.

Re:

I reckon it's all relevant and for the price it is being sold for, it's quite handy to have even as a back-up unit. The dual battery system is the top solution for sure, but for someone not using it all that much it is an expensive option to go with.
