Re: What tyres are we happy with?
You may have read in another thread (or a few of them) that I was putting together a Tyre FAQ with research on all the tyres suitable for the X-Trail.
I intended to finish the FAQ a long time ago, as there was only a very small selection of tyres available at the time I started it, but it's turned into a long process because every now and then, someone mentions a tyre/brand that I didn't already know about, and I add it to the list... Also manufacturers release new tyres, and stop production on older tyres.
About 6 months ago I had my heart set on some Coopers, but now they don't make that pattern any longer and it's been replaced by the STT. Upon looking at xtrailing's photos, I think they would currently be my pick of the bunch, as they look like they'd be very effective offroad and especially on slippery wet clay dirt roads.
Ultimately tyre choice is going to come down to the individual, their driving habits/preferences, and how much money they want to spend.

Re: What tyres are we happy with?
Cheers Phil,
11mm sounds about right and it's excellent after 20,000kms use. I'll measure mine-up when I hit 20K as well
My D694's have passed the test superbly in the wet when it poured down in Sydney for the last couple of days and especially yesterday.
The on road grip was awesome and compared to my previous Toyo's I used to slide from side to side when travelling at 100kms/hour on rainy day. It used to give me a feeling of floating on water. No such problem with the Bridgestone’s at all.

How many k's does everyone get out of there tyres.
I have 100% road tyres and I'm on 25,000 but I think the way they are wearing
I should be good for 50,000km easy

Re: What tyres are we happy with?
Hi guys.
Have now done 59,000kms on original tyres.
(Toyo Tranpath 14" ) Will, I guess get another 1,000kms from front & 5,000 from back. Not much off road driving. Will probably get the same tyres again as we are happy with them.
Cheers

Re: What tyres are we happy with?
Copied from one of my other posts:
quote: Since we do about 99.5% on road and only the occasional dirt road, we went for the Dunlop LM702 225/60R16. This is the same tyre that came out on some XR6 Turbos and some XR8s before they went to a later Dunlop. Handling improved a bit but braking improved out of sight. Wet weather performance is awesome. On the highway when it's raining heavy and everyone else slowing down, aquaplanning and pulling over, you can just go faster with these tyres on a XTrail !
True, no joke! I drove from Brisbane to Townsville and back earlier this year and it rained nearly all the way - I just pulled out and passed everything! I think the 4wd engaged a few times too...
The speed and load rating is good for the Exy, many road tyres aren't. Also the size is pretty spot on - I used the speedo checks on the highway to calculate that a genuine 100km/hr was about 102 indicated on the speedo.
The Dunlops were also good on both loose and hard packed dirt road, but I wouldn't try too much rocky stuff especially steep rocky climbs - you'd find yourself buying another tyre. They're probably OK in sand too but I haven't had a chance to test that.
The original Bridgestones lasted less than 40000km I think and we are on about 70000km with the Dunlop LM702s now.

Brett I have to agree with you almost entirely. The BFG's are an awesome tyre.
Mine are a 215/70/16 All-Terrain and am sure they suit the X-Trail in almost all 4x4 ventures.
I love my BFG's however I must admit, on-road handling has actually gotton worse for me compared to my original Bridgestone 215/65/16, and I seem to have more body roll, which would be because of the higher profile.
My advice to all, is if you have to alter from the standard profile, make sure you go a smaller profile and not larger if you can.
BFG don't make an all-terrain in a 215/60/16
