X-Trail STi Audio System - Error 3
Was hoping someone could help me
When changing CDs, my son managed to 'break' the CD player element - Now it wont eject, load or play CDs - After a few seconds of saying "Wait" it reverts back to the radio. We occasionally get an error message "Error 3". There are currently two CDs in the player (with 4 empty slots). Does anyone know what error 3 means or how to recovery from this error?

Re: X-Trail STi Audio System - Error 3
Hi John,
And welcome to the forums.
From the sounds of it, it appears that some sort of damage has occurred to your player. I can’t find any indication of your error message in the Nissan Service Manual, although if you approached Nissan, I’m sure they will know.
Can I suggest perhaps removing the fuse to the player for a short period to drain all power to it, and then reinsert the fuse. This might reset the player.
If your vehicle is still under warranty, I would approach Nissan and attempt to get the player repaired as a warranty item.
Cheers

Re: X-Trail STi Audio System - Error 3
Thanks for the advise Noel - I tried removing the fuse - but that didn't fix the problem - I still get "Err3" when I try to play a CD (LOAD and EJECT both time-out still). Guess my next check is to see if we have extended warranty

Re: X-Trail STi Audio System - Error 3
Hey John,
once it's borken, it's really broken - trust me i would know as i've had to replace my single disc cd player with one from a wreckers, due to laser/element breakage. Best bet is to check out your warranty, if you've run out try looking for one at a wreckers and if you still don't have any luck then i'd buy an aftermarket one.

Re: X-Trail STi Audio System - Error 3
And then a miracle occured!! - got in the car today and the CD player was working again - just like that!! All I can think of is that perhaps one of the CDs wasn't seated correctly and was'jogged' back into place during my wife's driving .
Haven't yet risked inserting additional CDs or ejecting the two that are in there, for fear that I might 'break' it again - guess we will have to try it sooner or later. The fear is that this may be an intermitent fault that will recur in the future.
Thanks for all your advise - Will let you know if this problem recurs.

Re: X-Trail STi Audio System - Error 3
john, may be jumping in late here by my experience was similar to jd72. 6 cd's, all jammed, had to have the whole unit replaced and got my CD's back in the mail some months later, they even replaced a CD that they damaged while trying to remove it.
it's gets better, my current x-trail is up to stereo # 4 for this exact same problem, Ok so granted, on one occasion i was silly enough to leave it on and shuffling while taking on a very bumpy track, so i'll cop that one, but the other three, not sure what happened there.
The best I could get out of Nissan was "yeah, they'll do that"
my advice - get it looked at or replaced as soon as you can
it could just simply be an inherent problem with in-dash-stackers, I had a Fairmont Ghia while waiting for my x-trail, had it for three months and jammed the stacker twice .... after a while you start to wonder "maybe it's all this heavy metal, i'm playing"

Re: X-Trail STi Audio System - Error 3
I had a similar problem this week-end after my wife tried to reload it, got to 5 cds then the same problem occured. She said it was not her fault! Well out of warranty too. I have no idea what error 3 refers to.
Anyway I fixed it - even surprised me.
I have a CD Workshop Manual that does'nt cover the audio unit but does tell you how to remove the dash. (Mine is series 1) Except that I think it omited to tell me to remove a bolt at the rear of the LH can-cooler.
The front of the dash including vents, surround, can-coolers etc came off relatively easily but the plastic is VERY easy to damage. The audio unit was then easy to see and remove by taking out 2 screws and unplugging the electrics.
With some trepidation I carefully removed screws and support brackets and eventually got the top cover of the CD unit which is separate and attached to the radio/tape unit.
I notice all 5 disks were lined up was but not able to remove them in any way from the top. I twisted a few cogs and bits to see if anything was jammed which it was not. I noticed that the bit that slides the CDs in and out was in the centre of the unit so I carefully slid it to the rear. No real reason for doing so.
To cut a long story short, I put it back together, refitted it to the car and wonder of wonder, it worked after a lot of whirring noises. Got the old 5 disks out and replaced 6.
Gave it a good woprk out and it seems fine. Seems to be a weakness there if others are having the same problem.
