Driving short distances

Hey i now work about 4 kms from my house and was wondering if continuously driving to and from work and not letting the engine warm up would do any damage? If so, what would it do?

I may just walk and use the car on weekends.

Thanks in advance, Matt

Re: Driving short distances

Matt,

You'd be surprised how quick your engine does warm up, but then again you do live in Canberra, emoticon

I doubt short trips would have much effect on the engine itself, but would to the battery as it doesn't have enough time to top up. Which is why I just stick mine on the charger every couple of months as my work is only about 5-6kms from my house.

Actually the best thing you could do for your exy is have it running 24hrs a day and don't let it cool down.emoticon It's the cooling and heating that kills motors, that's why you find engines in Taxis that have over 500000km on the same engine.

Cheers

Re: Driving short distances

I know we're talking Canberra weather here, but you're probably doing as much harm to yourself as the vehicle if you could walk most days - doctor says I have to get the colesterol down and walking is best. I have always worked on the theory that as long as the vehicle is getting some regular long runs, a lot of the potential for damage within from condensation building up and so on is alleviated. Re: Driving short distances

Thanks guys, i appreciate the replies. I will definitely be walking in summer, but if there are days like today (where it was freezing gail force winds and rain) then i will just drive.

And noel i have also heard the same thing about running the engine 24hrs a day, but could you imagine the petrol bill each week? :o

Cheers,

Matt
