posticon How do you fix rear rattles?

Hi Guys

Having felt very smug about our nice quiet Xtrail, we have developed a rattle from the back of the car.

It seems to be the plastic trim along the roof on both sides at the back (as it moves a bit when Anita washes the car).

Seems to have started since the really strong winds the last three Tuesdays (trees down, houses unroofed, you know what we mean!).

Don't want to do anything too drastic without checking how it is attached - would be a shame to break it while trying to stop a noise! emoticon

Does it slide on, clip on, squeeze on or what???

Thanks for your help with this.

Problem Solved (I think)

Hi guys

Went into Main North Nissan today to find out how to fix the clip at the back of the roof trim.

For those with the Ti model, you don't need to worry about it, as the rear spoiler attaches where my clips are loose.

The Service Department got one of their technicians to look at the problem, and he couldn't work it out, so he went to look at the manual in Spare Parts (made us feel better, knowing that a trained tech couldn't work it out either).

To fix the rattle, they need to remove the interior trim and roof lining, then tighten the bolts. The tech reckons it will take a couple of hours emoticon but can be done at the next service. Luckily our warranty hasn't expired, so we don't have to pay. emoticon

So, I have brought the next service forwards by a few weeks to make sure that the roof trim doesn't fall off before they get a chance to fix it - I'm sure that it wouldn't be a same day job if the part they need to bolt on was missing on the day emoticon

Apparently they haven't seen it before - they said that I must have driven over rough surfaces to work it loose. The Exy hasn't seen nearly as much off road use as most of the others on this forum, so that doesn't quite gel for me. We bought it as a three month old demonstrator, and somehow I don't think that three months driving before we bought it would be enough to shake the bolts loose two years later emoticon

At least it should be a happy conclusion to the saga. emoticon Must be pretty rare, as nobody on the forum posted any type of comment, althugh lots of people looked at the posting. emoticon

Re: How do you fix rear rattles?

Greg,

I missed your 1st post and only saw it today.

The loose bits you're talking about called the end-caps of the roof railing and they're loose on every ST exy I have seen, well, I mean you can move them a bit when you wash the car.

How do I know this? emoticon

Well, when I was shopping around for a roof spoiler, I wondered how it would attach to the roof and sit in place instead of those end-caps.

Their movement encouraged me to look "deeper" emoticon and by doing so I managed to snap the end-cap from it's place and it cracked.

At least I managed to see the bolt in the roof that was holding it in place and which would have been used to hold the roof spoiler as well.

I rang and visited 3-4 dealerships and none of them knew how to fit a roof spoiler.

One dealership said it's an all day job and they would charge me over $400 to have it fitted.

Yes, they need to take the roof lining off to get to these 2 bolts holding your end-caps and the roof spoiler.

But I tell you what. Am about 80% sure that this is NOT the source of the rattle you're hearing emoticon

There is no way for these 2 big bolts to come loose. I've seen them myself and they're solid as a rock and sealed as well to stop any roof leaks.

When I picked-up my aftermarket roof spoiler, I installed it myself and I didn't end-up taking the roof lining off OR using the roof bolts, as it screwed straight onto the roof railing.

As for the broken end-cap of mine, well, God bless the wreckers emoticon

The rattle at the back you're hearing is most likely caused by the back seats locking pin, try to wrap a tape around the pin itself when it's locked in position and see if that would solve your problem.

The other possibility could be the plastic flooring at the back. Glue a thin spongy layer to that to stop it rattling. I solved this by buying the rear carpet bit, which muffles any rattles at the back.

I wouldn't want the dealer learning on how to take the roof lining off on my car for the first time LOL emoticon

Mine move too - but Jalal, you said the bolts couldn't come loose - so how are the plastic end caps attached to the bolts? Is there any way to stop the movement? How did you fit the new end cap from the wrecker if you didn't undo the lining?
Are you sure the rattle is inside the vehicle? Elsewhwere we've talked about the rattle in the rear muffler that develops ridiculously early and requires replacment of the muffler (under warrantee).

Re: How do you fix rear rattles?

Hi Dave,

The plastic end-caps have a U shape base which go under the head of the bolts. That is why they're loose, because they're being attached only from one side (i.e. that U shape base) but just sit on the roof railing from the other side.

The one got from the wrekcers I just managed to push under the head of the bolt.

The end-caps became redundant, as the after market spoiler wrapped around them and sat on top of them while being screwed on to the roof railing, so there movement is no longer there, because it's being held by the spoiler.

There are many things that could cause the rattle inside the car at the back (boot) area.

While the muffler rattle is a possibility, I personally could tell the difference between the muffler rattle and the plastic parts inside the car making the noise.

Re: How do you fix rear rattles?

Well, yesterday was the day for the fix emoticon

Arrived at the dealers for the service and roof trim end cap fix at 7.45 am, and was told "It should take just over a couple of hours - we'll say 11 am to make sure its ready for 11:30 when you need it" they told me emoticon

So I went for a long walk, had a swim (Masters Games next weekend, and another training session never does any harm!), another long walk back, and arrived just before 11 am. emoticon Was told "We're having a bit of a problem, but it will be ready very soon" emoticon , so I sat and waited.

By 11:30 I was getting quite anxious, so went to see what was happening emoticon . Was told "Just needs to be checked" and that it wouldn't take long. emoticon

By 11:45 I was standing at the counter and ready to suggest they give me a loan car so I could get to my next appointment emoticon and I would come back for the Xtrail when they had finished it. emoticon

Finally drove away at midday after they went through what they did during the service. Quite comical really - they always rattle off what they have done in a fairly normal tone of voice, but I knew there was an issue when she said "Removed interior side and roof trim, checked bolts, GLUED emoticon emoticon end cap"

Sadly, when I left the dealership it was quite windy, and the rattling was still apparent. 8(

The rattling is definitely from OUTSIDE the car - sounds like something flicking against the bodywork on the outside. The roof trim itself is loose (moves up and down about 2mm), so apart from the end caps being loose, the noise could well be coming from the main roof trim strip.

I had been thinking about your idea, Jalal, to put an after market spoiler on (so that it covers the end caps), but you said that you screwed it onto the roof trim itself, and I can't see how my loose roof trim could support the extra force of the wind over a spoiler emoticon

So, after all this I am somewhat disappointed. emoticon

The dealer gave me a customer feedback form, though, so at least they seem to care enough about customer satisfaction to want to know how to improve! Decided that, like sending an email when you feel strongly about it, its best to wait overnight before sending it (gives you time to tone down the emotions of the moment)

My first suggestion will be to get the staff involved in training on how to fix some of the body problems that might happen from time to time, or else get someone in who KNOWS how to fix them. emoticon Sounds very much like you could be the expert that they need, Jalal emoticon - don't suppose you'd like a career change and a move to beautiful South Australia?

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
Greg has just come inside to say he's just had a look under the Xtrail to see if there's anything else that could be causing the noise.
WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!
He's found a loose panel rear of the rear right wheel arch inside the mud flap area, that he thinks might not have been properly re-fitted after the reversing sensors were installed. The rattle didn't start straight after the reversing sensors were installed - they were fitted early December last year, and the rattling has only been going on for a couple of months or so. He's put two bolts (marine grade) through with lock nuts, so this may eliminate that problem. Maybe that was the cause of the rattle, not the end cap and roof trim?

We'll take the Xtrail for a LONG drive tomorrow to try it out (going to do some off-roading in the National Park at the bottom of Yorke Peninsula, finally) - to hell with the high petrol prices, its time to live while we're still young enought to enjoy it! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Will let you know the progress later

Re: How do you fix rear rattles?

Hi Guys,

Am back in Sydney emoticon

Anita,

After all that wait at the dealership and what you have stated above, it seems NOTHING was done emoticon and even worse, I think the might have snapped the end-caps and decided it was too tough to get to the bolts, so they have "Glued" them back on emoticon I hope not of course.

I know what I'll be saying in the feedback form in this case, but it is really disappointing to see dealerships struggle follow the user manual, which clearly has a section for trouble-shooting all sorts of rattles and how to remove (not glue in place) the end-caps.

The end-caps are there as a temporary solution only, as they will be removed if one decides to upgrade and get the roof spoiler. Although with such lack of knowledge, I doubt they ever sold and fitted a factory roof spoiler themselves.

The aftermarket roof spoiler I fitted has 4 screws (2 on each side) and I drilled the solid roof rails (not the end-caps) to put in place. I can swing myself holding it and it wont move emoticon that's how strong it is. It also has double-sided tape from the inside, so it's pretty tough fit.

Needless to say that I've driven off-road and in really bumpy situations as well as high speed (about 150kms/hour-just to test it LOL) and it's still there emoticon

The loose plastic panel under the mudguard might be it. I also suggest Greg checks all the other plastic guards under the exy while he's at it, as they're held-up with fiddly self tapping plastic screws which could come-off at any second.

I hope you found the source of the rattle.

Well finally no more rattles. We did the long drive [600+ k's] and there is no more rattles thanks to ME [Greg]. We will be giving the Nissan dealer a feed back on their service looking for the noise
