Re: LPG autogas

Hi guys. Just gonna add my recent crappy experience with my exie. It is a 2006 STS and when I bought it, it already had LPG installed and had done 70000km. Just before Xmas last year the Mil light started coming on, so I went to a mechanic(my usual was mechanic was away) and they checked it over and thought it might be sensors etc so started with o2 sensors. Still no joy after that and various other tests he couldnt find the issue. By this time the car was running rough as guts, and then, yes started over heating. Thankfully by this time my mechanic was back so had the car towed straight to him. Head gasket gone, and the valves burnt out. No apparent damage done to the head so they went ahead and replaced valves with hardened ones and new head gasket. Apparently the valves were totally stuffed from the LPG. There goes $3500
Ok, I get the car back and it is running beautifully and then 2 weeks later the dreaded Mil light again. I checked it and was Random Misfire, same as before. The heart started pumping overtime. Back to the mechanic. Chucked the consult on and random misfire. He thought it could be Crank sensors, so ordered some in. While waiting for the new sensors to come, she over heated again and yes, toasted. Without going into detail, apparently something to do with the pistons which was not able to be detected the first time, and the direct cause was from the LPG. Am now waiting for another engine to be put in which has about 80,000km on it, and removing the LPG for good. My mechanic is also not charging me any labor costs for the new engine as he felt pretty crap about it. Still gonna cost me about $4000 though . But I am having a few other things replaced at the same time.Thats about $7500 in about 2 months and that hurts The reason I have written this novel is to warn anyone that is thinking of or already has installed LPG to make sure that you keep an eye on your engine and do not overuse the LPG as it can stuff your engine and bank balance big time. Cheers. But I still Love my Exy))

Re: LPG autogas

Hi Mark,
Could you let us know what type of LPG system it was ?
Have you approached the manufacturer/importer of it to see if there is anything they can help with or atleast get their opinion on why this has happened ?

I would also like Peter60 to comment regarding the Liquid Injection LPG system they have.

Re: LPG autogas

Hi Kev. It was a Tartarini Sequential Gas Injection Systems. I haven't followed up with the manufacturer as when I bought the car, there was no paperwork or information on the system or who installed it in the car, so I couldn't see any point. Have got to the point now that I just want my car to run properly without any dramas, and I guess the LPG for me, just isn't worth the risk anymore.

In WA a spare tire must be fitted safely in the back.I made my own mount bolting to the 3 off,12mm bolts that hold the rear drivers side shock absorber to the car body.Tire stands vertical & just off the floor. Will put it on my lomasck YouTube to look at. $150 should be all it should cost to get one made like this.

Re: LPG autogas

Another case of burnt valves and pistons from extended LPG use here.

Seems the standard valves and pistons are not suited to LPG use and time is just starting to show this with the number of failures we are starting to see.

I'd like to hear from Peter60 or anyone who has the LPG Injection System about how long they have had an Xtrail fitted with LPG which is still running without problems and what percentage of LPG v's Petrol running they have done to-date.

Maybe the problems we are seeing could be from people running totally on LPG and not using petrol for a minimum period at regular intervals as Peter60 initially explained when he introduced the system.

Re: LPG autogas

Thanks Les,

As you have a T31 I wonder if there is a difference in pistons and valves compared to the T30 models which might play a part.

Re: LPG autogas

Hi all,

Was just curious to hear what the current progress for this topic is?

I wrote a nice reply tonight and switching between tabs has made it refresh to blank ... :-(

There is 2 or diff types of delivering/using LPG as a second fuel type? Like direct wet injection or something?
- any better delivery systems to tank other than under rear bumper?
- safe to use? Obviously cuz it's road legal but seriously potential for accident?

So in summary, I looked up that company and found details stating they do Xtrails fitouts but all 3 successive links went no-where.
- Anyone know whether they (Aust LPG wholesalers I think) still fitout LPG tanks?
- Also was this an Adelaide based company

In terms of cost
- original estimate like 2-3yrs ago posted on here was $4-4.5k with a $2k rebate at the time to be reduced to $1k
 * costs now?
 * rebate state or fed thing or nonexistent anymore?
- fuel economy of LPG still good?
 * current cost of LPG $/L
 * availability, I.e. Rural servos cuz I live far NW Qld

Just wanting to see whether I could utilise my unused tyre well better while delivering greater distance to fill benefits. I see from previous postings this system can pay itself off when gas was half the price of fuel for the same economy and considering I drove 20,000 in 6 months could pay this off sooner than most.

Cheers for your updated thoughts,
Ben

Re: LPG autogas

Our x-trail is now in the mechanics with 2 burned valves from the LPG after only about 70000klms.We fitted the liquid system thinking it would be a lot better but sadly no, the bill is $2500 so far but a least it will have the hardened valves it.

Re: LPG autogas

Hi Steve, sorry to hear about your problems.
Could you give us a little information on how much of the time you ran it on LPG compared to petrol and what length of time was the intervals between petrol uses ?
When enquiring on the liquid injection system as they just came out, I was told by the installation company that they recommended running petrol for a percentage of time to lubricate the valves and stop them burning. There is also a product they use in the UK called "Flash Lube" for this. Have you used any ?
