Re: Window tinting
Hi Graham,
Read all about it HERE my friend.
Search word is "tinting"
The darkest legal window tint (depending in which State you're is 35%)
HERE is the NSW Regualtions for window tinting taken from the NSW RTA web site.
Please refer to your State's traffic authority for more information.

Re: Window tinting
Graham,
A 35% film would allow 35% of sunlight/UV rays coming through and would block around 63%
A 20% film would block 80% of UV rays, however it is not entirely legal because it becomes very dark at night-time making the occupants of the car less visible to police.
The 35% film is what the dealer would use.

Re: Window tinting
Since the new Prado tint is 30% (above the Australian standards), they are allowing this level on the rear windows and even darker (totally blacked out) on the cargo area windows. You may notice some new 4wd's have three levels of tint, from the front to the rear cargo area. This is because of the different allowed levels.
Authority has now been given to the RTA and Police to use a light tester, which detects this level of light passing through the window. If you are found above the approved level, a defect notice will be issued. If it is serious enough, a red defect is issued and the car has to be towed away. The ones that are targetted are the two front windows.
There is a way around it. If you get on well with your family doctor and have children, he can issue you with a certificate stating that due to the UV levels and concerns with skin cancer, then he recommends you fit darker tint.
But on a safety issue, my 'work car' has 20% reflective tint and at night it is hard to see out of them, especially around corners. May look good, but safety is paramount.
I still love my tint though and can't wait to rip this factory stuff off and get something better.
Good luck.

Re: Window tinting
I am having all windows behind the B pillar tinted on Saturday. I have decided on the 33.7% grade. This is dark, but not too dark.We can`t put anything on the windscreen or front door glass.

Re: Window tinting
Dave,
What colour is the film?
Is the 33.7% the darkest legal in the UK? cause the 30% here in Australia is not that dark at all.
In some countries where tinting the front doors is illegal, I have seen guys using very faint colour tint, mainly to stop the UV rays from getting through, is this allowable in the UK?
What about cars that come tinted from the manufacturer?

Re: Window tinting
There is no legal limit on windows at the back of the B pillar ( from back of front doors ) There is a 20% and 5% this is really dark. The lightest is 50%. I have had samples and picked the 33.7%. It`s about mid range as I didn`t want it too dark.

Re: Window tinting
Seems like our percentages are quoted the opposite to yours Dave.
For you, 30% would be percentage transmitted, yes ?
For us, 30% is the level of reduction.
